Papoose Explains Why he Feels Kendrick Lamar Responded To his Diss

Out of the dozens of rappers that went at Kendrick Lamar after his controversial verse on Big Sean's 'Control' song, the only person it appears Kendrick is concerned about is Papoose. Of cos even though Kendrick brushed off Papoose's diss and called it comical, real Hip Hop heads know Pap struck a nerve with that song. That's why in the leaked video of the T.D.E B.E.T Cypher, Kendrick had a few lines going at Pap. When asked in a recent interview (with XXL) whether he feels he struck a nerve with him (Kendrick), Pap replied with...



Oh, more than a nerve, I struck the entire nervous system. He couldn’t sleep at night, when he opened his freezer he’d see my face, when he closed his eyes…[Laughs] I’m just bullshitting. But I think that struck a nerve, definitely. It shook the ground up, let’s keep it real—when I dropped my response, it shook the ground up. You got guys who say, “this response or that one,” but come on, man, my “Control” response has over a million views already. I look around at some of the other guys, they got 300,000 or something like that, you know what I mean? There’s no comparison. Come on.

Drake Throws Slight Jab At Kendrick Lamar

A couple of weeks ago, Kendrick Lamar had the whole world (well, the hip hop world) in a frenzy, when he went at his peers on Big Sean's Control song. A couple of his contemporaries that he said he wanted to lyrically murder were his homies, and they didn't take the diss too seriously. But, from all indications, it seems Drake is not too cool with Kendrick's move.


During a recent interview with Elliot Wilson (CRWN), he was asked about the verse, and he responded with...

“That ['Control'] verse was a moment to talk about. Are you listening to it now, though?,” he asked, hushing all 850 attendees at NYU’s Skirball Center, including Wilson. Drake continued: “He didn’t come in there on some wild, ‘I’m in New York, fuck everybody.’ I almost wish he had come in there on that shit because I kind of lost a little bit of respect for the sentiment of the verse,” Drake said. “If it’s really ‘fuck everybody’ then it needs to be ‘fuck everybody’. Hmm! He made a point right there...are people listening to the song right now? Just like 5 weeks, and people have totally forgotten the song. So, really, what was Drake trying to say with his words above? I know he was trying to be a bit diplomatic, and not send negative waves out there, but he made his point clear...he didn't feel the move all the way. I think I was cool with the whole competitiveness he was trying to bring in with the verse, but I never liked that King Of New York line...that line is not showing skill, that is just pure disrespect, cos you don't become a king of a place you are not representing...even if you have been able to sell a lot of records in that place.

Drake Says Kendrick Lamar Can't Murder Him On Any Level

I got to be honest, I am kinda tired of writing about this, but I just got to do it one more time for Drake's sake...Drake is my dude. In the last couple of weeks, Hip Hop has been all about Kendrick Lamar's controversial 'Control' verse, that had him calling out some of his peers, and also calling himself the King Of New York. One of the rappers he said he wanted to murder on the verse was Drake, and Drake has responded to Kendrick...well, not via a track.


Drake covers next month's issue of Billboard magazine, and one of the questions he was asked about in his interview for the magazine was whether he felt threatened by Kendrick Lamar's threats to murder him (lyrically), and he said-

"It just sounded like an ambitious thought to me. That's all it was. I know good and well that Kendrick's not murdering me, at all, in any platform. So when that day presents itself, I guess we can revisit the topic." 













I think the only advantage Kendrick might have over Drake is in delivery department...people get carried away with how fast or multisyllabic a rapper gets sometimes, they over look other areas of a rap verse like meaningful lyrics, wordplay, and actual structure of the rapper's verse. I think Drake really is dope when he decides to rap, and he is really musical, and a very successful rapper. If we use A$AP Rocky's Fuckin Problems to judge who will murder who, I think it is safe to say Drake murdered everybody on that track...including Kendrick. If you are honest, you will agree with me. If I was meant to crown the new school rappers, I would say Drake is the King overall, then Kendrick Lamar, and then J.Cole.

Kendrick Lamar Finally Addresses Controversial 'Control' Verse

About two weeks ago, a Big Sean song titled 'Control' hit the internet. It had Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica on it, but it was the Kendick Lamar verse that got everyone talking. I think anyone that listens to rap music knows why the verse was so controversial, but to sum it up, Kedrick Lamar implied that he wanted Hip Hop to be more competitive, and he also called himself the King Of New York. A lot of New York rappers like Joell Ortiz and Papoose felt offended by that line and fired shots at Kendrick with their own version of the Control song.



On a recent interview with Rap-Up, Kendrick Lamar address the controversial issue-

"Honestly I didn't know there would be so much speculation behind it. I just wanted to rap. Anybody that knows me doing music, I wanna just rap. I think that's the case right there of maybe I just dumbed down my lyrics just a little bit, The irony of that line is the people that actually understood it and got it, was the actual kings of New York, You know, me sitting down with them this past week and them understanding that it's not about actually being the king of whatever coast. It's about leaving a mark as great as Biggie, as great as 'Pac." 

So who are the real Kings Of New York? Jay Z? Diddy? Nas? 50 Cent? I don't know. A lot of people downplayed that King Of New York line, and made it seem like people didn't understand what he was trying to say or whatever, but I still think it was a disrespectful line. T.I was saying the other day that Kendrick could actually claim to be the King Of New York since he is played on New York radio more than most New York rapper, but I am sure T.I wouldn't be singing the same song if Kendrick had called himself the King Of The South...Bias right there. Anyway, it is not even about radio play, you have to reside in a place and project that place through your music and style to proclaim yourself the king of anywhere. That is how I see it. If Kendrick had said he was the King of rap right now, I bet most rappers from New York wouldn't have reacted the way they did.

Nas Comments On Kendrick Lamar's King Of New York Claim

In case you have been under a rock for the last couple of days, let me do a recap of what's buzzing right now. Like 5 days ago, Control, a Big Sean song hit the Internet which had verses from Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica. On his verse, Kendrick spazzed out, putting himself in the same league as Jay Z, Nas, Eminem, and Andre 3000. He also called himself the King Of New York...and also called out some of his peers like J.Cole, Drake, Big Krit and so on, saying they were his homeboys, but his plan is to murder them (lyrically). Anyway, a lot of people have responded to Kendrick's claim to the crown of the King Of New York, and also the fact that he left out some rappers names when he mentioned some of the greatest. Joell Ortiz, Papoose, Lupe Fiasco and Cassidy have recorded responses using the Control song instrumental. Nas, was caught during a Hennessey concert, and Hot 97's Miss Info asked him what he felt about the Kendrick verse. It was clear he didn't want to speak much on it, cos all he said was...





"Wow! My reaction is wow." After further probing, he said..."I love hip-hop right now. ... Certain fans like certain eras of rap, certain fans are not up on certain eras, so they don't really remember all of them. Yeah, yeah, yeah, KRS-One, MC Shanand all the way to Busy Bee. This is what hip-hop is all about." It was clear Nas didn't want to really speak on the issue, so Miss Info redirected him to the question again, and he said..."You gotta ask him [about that line]. [Was I offended?] I'm a listener."

Talib Kweli Says Its Too Early For Kendrick Lamar To Put Himself In The Same League With The Greats

In a recent interview, Talib Kweli was asked about the Kendrick Lamar verse on Big Sean's Control song, where he put himself in the same league as Jay Z and Nas, and Talib said it was a little bit too early for Kendrick to do that-

“When I compete, I’m competing against not just who’s hot right now or who’s trendy right now, I’m competing against the whole cannon of music. Like when I think about the greats like Big Daddy Kane and Rakim, they still in my top 10. Kendrick Lamar is creeping up into my top 10. But he only put out one official, official album and a couple of mixtapes. Maybe like Kane said, in 20 years Kendrick will be in my number one. Up in the top five like a Jay Z or Nas has made it. But until then I think it’s premature. As much as I like Kendrick and respect him…I think it’s premature for anyone who knows better to be like, ‘Oh, automatically he’s number one. Yeah, he’s gunning for number one. He’s gunning for the top spot. You better watch your spot. He’s coming for it.’ But there’s a lot to be done.”

Yea, I think so too. But, it seems like the kid is really hungry for that 'top 5 dead or alive' status. I get a little pissed when I hear some bandwagon people saying he is the greatest, but I do recognise he is a super dope rapper. I have been listening to his music since 2010, and I know where he is coming from, and all the work he has put in. Way back on his version of Kanye's Monster song, he said something similar to what is causing all the commotion right now...he said he was the best rapper alive. It's good when artists have total confidence in themselves. I wish him all the best. I know his second album will solidify his greatness.
