New Music: Supreme Remix (Rick Ross feat. Big K.R.I.T, Mase, and Fabolous)

Rick Ross took a break from promoting his Mastermind album, but i guess he is back at it again. He just dropped the remix to his Supreme song (the video to the original song was released last week), which features Big K.R.I.T, Mase, and Fabolous. Ross has a new verse on this song, and Lil Wayne did a lil skit at the beginning and end of the song.

Puffy and Mase Detail The Making of 'Can't Nobody Hold Me Down'

I can never forget this song. The day after I played the role of the bestman at my cousin's wedding two years ago, we drove around with this song on repeat, drinking a bottle of Hennessy. This was one of those songs that made me fall in-love with that Mase and Puffy combo when I was a teenager. Hell, even my Dad, in his fifties at the time would always bump the song in his Benz 200. The song was so different and futuristic for that time (mid 90s). In a recent Complex TV special, attention was put on the song (Can't Nobody Hold Me Down; off Puffy's No Way Out album), and they got Mase and Puff Daddy to talk on how the song came about. By the way, the song was sampled from a Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five's track titled The Message.

Below is what Puff said about the song.

“I knew I liked the record. I knew I had produced a lot of hit records, but I didn’t have nothing with my voice on it. So, in the grand scheme of things it was the experiment that turned into a legendary formula...It was one of my favorite songs growing up, but I felt like I could put like a twist on it,” he added, while speaking on Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five's "The Message.” “I felt like it was a sample because of the tempo and the speed of it. It wasn’t really played in the clubs a lot. And it wasn’t really something that—It was something that everybody knew. There was an opportunity to put a new flip on it…And this was during the time of course when sampling—when everybody was sampling and looking for the hottest sample.”





And below is what Mase had to say about the making of the song.







“That record was Ice Cube’s record. So, when I heard it I was thinking ‘What are we doing? This is Ice Cube beat.’ And at that point we had already had beef with the West Coast. So, I was thinking ‘Why are we doing this beat again? This is not gon’ be good’…It took me literally like two weeks to figure out exactly what he wanted. Like I would hit it here and there and then I would tell him certain things. He would go ‘No, that’s not it.’ He said ‘Let me see where you’re going with it.’ And the first line he’d be like ‘No, that’s not it.’ And I would think ‘You didn’t hear the rest of it.’ He’s like ‘I heard the first line.’ I was like ‘You didn’t hear the next bar. The next bar is crazy.’ He was like ‘But you’re setting it up. Instead of just coming out with it.’ So, I would write a dope verse and think it’s for me. And he was like ‘No, I wanna say the verse you were gonna say for you.’ And then at that point I realized working with him I’m gonna have to go over the top cause the verse I think’s for me may be his verse.”




Hahaha! Mase was doing double work...writing for himself and then for Puffy. Loon took over that job after Mase left the rap scene. And a couple of rappers took over after Loon left Bad Boy Records. 

New Video: Nothing (Mase feat. Eric Bellinger)

Mase is coming back gradually, and definitely shouldn't be called Pastor Mase any longer. This new video is a sure indicator he has left the church thing. Nothing is the first single off his upcoming album, Now We Even. The song features the super talented singer, Eric Bellinger.

Mase Gives Details on His 'Now We Even' Album

Mase is back to the old Mase now; please don't attach 'Pastor' to his name no more. In his recent interview with Atlanta's 107.9, he spoke on his upcoming album, Now We Even.





"We got an album in the works. It should be out the first week in October. Gonna have 'Ye on it, Ross, Puff, Dipset... it's going to be really special."









During the course of the interview, he also spoke on the next single off the album, Billboard, which would feature Rick Ross and Kanye West. Yea, I definitely would be looking forward to hearing that. I think Mase is slowly getting his groove back. Currently, his Nothing single (feat. Eric Bellinger) is the only official song released off the album. You can listen to that below.

Our photo of the day is that of Mase and Puff Daddy (Yea, he has gone back to that). Mase just finalized his divorce with his wife, and is back to his playboy Mase status. Just last week, Mase and Puff Daddy were on the official remix of Troy Ave's Your Style, with T.I.

Mase Recalls One of His Favorite 'Biggie' Memories

If Biggie was still alive he would have been 42 years old a couple of days ago (on May 21). So, as a celebration of his life, a couple of people that were close to him while he was alive were interviewed, and asked to speak on some of their favorite memories with him. Mase was signed to Bad Boy Records a year before Biggie died, and he did some songs with the late Christopher Wallace, so it was legit to ask him about his memories...below is the story he shared. 

One time everybody was on the plane and the plane start shaking. It was everyone’s first time on a private jet. We all from the ghetto, we don’t know about no private jets. So we on a private jet and the joint just started shaking. Everybody getting scary, cause the the plane is shaking like it’s about to crash. Then Biggie puts his head down with his hoodie on and pulls out his CD….Ready To Die. [Laughs] Everybody started laughing and it just made the whole trip better. (Power 106 FM Interview)

Mase Names His Top 5 Dead Or Alive

Ma$e is preparing to release his 4th album (We Even), and has been doing a lot of interviews lately. In a recent sit-down with XXL, he spoke on the rappers on his Mount Rushmore...His top 5 dead or alive. Check out his list below. 




“One, Biggie. Two, N.W.A. Three, Nas…Nas is one of the illest. Four [is Lil Wayne]…I like No Ceilings Weezy…I like Weezy when he’s high. Five it's a tie between…Nah, it’s not a tie…I’ma go with Hov. I wouldn’t say Em because the way Eminem rap…there were all types of niggas who rapped like that who couldn’t get on the radio….same rapid flow never got put in that light." 

Nice list, but I wouldn't have pegged Mase as one to be an NWA fan. Anyway, he has been around long enough to know what he is talking about. His upcoming album, Now We Even, doesn't have a release date yet, but Mase has let his fans know that it is coming pretty soon. 

New Music: Nothing (Mase feat. Eric Bellinger)

Yup! Mase got a new song, and it is titled Nothing. The song is the latest single from his upcoming album, Now We Even. I particularly like this song, cos it shows Mase is slowly going back to the old Mase. When I say the old Mase, I don't necessarily mean a dope Mase or a 90s Mase or whatever; I just mean, he is going back to being himself, and not Pastor Mase. He talks about regular everyday stuff like Sex on this song, so you know this ain't no preacher preaching. It will take time, and a couple more songs like this for him to just be himself again, and not be put in a box about what he can or can't rap about. By the way, the song features Eric Bellinger, and dude sure can SING!

50 Cent Reveals How Much Diddy Wanted For Mase Contract

Mase was one of the most successful rappers of the 90s, and even when he went off to be a pastor in 1999, he was still signed to Diddy's Bad Boy Records. His contract had not expired, so when he tried to join G Unit in 2005, he still had obligations to Diddy contractually. In this recent interview on the Funkmaster Flex Show, 50 Cent revealed how much Diddy wanted him to pay for Mase's contract.

"I was like, 'What you looking for for that?' He said two million. I'm like, 'Ma$e ain't worth two million with two million in his pocket. Are you crazy?' This is right before we went on that [G-Unit] tour. The principal is more important. ... He was a million over what Dep was supposed to [make]. He could have made a million dollars out of it but he's saying two million. ... We could have did it for the million dollars. He could have got that back."

Hmm! I think Diddy should have gone with a million for that Mase deal; that would have been a good deal. Anyway, that was about 9 years ago...time sure does fly. What's Mase up too right now? He keeps coming and going, like he is unsure of what he wants to do with his life.

Classic Hip Hop Video; Been Around The World (Puff Daddy feat. Mase and Biggie)

Diddy (Puff Daddy) made some of the best hip Hop videos of the 90s...this is one of my all time favorites from that era- Been Around The World, Puff Daddy feat. Mase and Biggie. It's a super creative, super colorful video. Most videos are all the same now; they are all shot in a club, or in a house with a party going on, or on the streets. This is...let me shot up and let you watch it...or watch it again if you already saw it back then.

Throwback Song: 24 Hours To Live (Mase feat. The LOX, Black Rob, and DMX)

This was one of my best songs off Mase's debut album, Harlem World (1997). The throwback song of the day is 24 Hours To Live by Mase feat. The LOX, Black Rob, and DMX. I loved every single rapper's verse on this song, but I have to say that DMX stole the show.

Mase Says He Once Thought About Knocking J.Cole Out

Mase has been off and on the Hip Hop music scene for a couple of years now, but it seems he has come to stay this time around. He is currently working on his fourth studio album, Now We Even, and during a radio interview on 107.5 FM, he spoke about once wanting to knock J.Cole out for dissing him.

He was actually asked which new rappers he enjoys, and he said he liked J.Cole, but that he wanted to hit him when he saw him at an event once, cos J.Cole dissed him on a song.

"I like J. Cole too when he's not taking shots at me. I saw him one day, I was going to hit him but I was too grown to be knocking light-skinned people out. But I really like him as an artist. When I saw him I was like, 'Oh he a kid, he don't get it [laughs]."

I guess Mase knows one or two things about getting knocked out...back in the 90s, he got knocked out by Ghostface killa for saying something slick about the Clan. In fact, Ghostface broke Mase's Jaw.. In this case with Cole, I don't think Cole really dissed Mase. Check out the J.Cole lyrics Mase is referring to below...

Basically, Cole was just saying he is as hot as Mase was in 97; i don't see any diss in that. Maybe Mase felt slighted by the fact that Cole brought up his 'Pastor Mase' past...or maybe he feels J.Cole made him out to be a hasbeen. Whatever the case, I still like them both, and I'm hoping Mase makes a strong comeback with his album this year.

Mase Releases New Song- Why Can't We

As a die-hard Mase fan, I am so happy to inform the other Ma$e fans out there that Ma$e is officially back. He just dropped a new single titled Why Can't We, and from the lyrics of the song, it is clear that he ain't playing around. He ain't confused no more...he is back to Harlem World Mase...not Pastor Mase. I told my friends a couple of months back that I knew he was gonna get inspired and make a come back when Jay Z used his flow on the Magna Carta album. Pusha T also used Mase's flow on his song with Kelly Rowland off the My Name Is My Name album.

Mase Speaks On Upcoming Album- Now We Even

Mase has been on and off the hip hop scene since he retired in 1999. He came back in 2004 still under Diddy, then he was with  50 Cent around 2005, then he disappeared again, and then came back around 2009, and disappeared again. But the last 2 years, it seems like he is really here to stay now. My problem with Mase is that he can't deliver at his full potential unless he removes the barrier of being called a gospel rapper. He needs to drop the 'pastor mase' title, and just rap about life. He can still preach without being to preachy...you get what I mean? He can deliver a positive message without coming off as someone that is 'holier than thou.' I am a Mase fan, and would love to here the old Mase flow, but with some positive message.

Drake Plans To Sign Mase

Mase and Diddy performed at Drake's OVO Fest concert a couple of days ago, and it was all love with the bunch. During a recent interview, Drake spoke about his interest in signing the rapper turned pastor, turned rapper. I think Mase would do good if he goes back to the old Mase, and not the Mase that wants to do the clean rap verses. I ain't saying he has to curse his ass off, but not cursing and making your rap all clean kinda limits your level of creativity.









Below is what Drake had to say about working with Mase in the future-

"Funny enough, me and Ma$e have just been talking about what the future holds, about what he wants to do and anything is possible man. I told Ma$e, 'You're Ma$e, at the end of the day so I don't think you should end up on anybody else's label. ... I would love to be involved. I know Kanye took an interest in Ma$e as well, because Ma$e is like the original fly guy that made it all look extremely fun, dancing. ... There's a lot of rappers who get out there and take themselves super serious and it's not fun like that. They don't laugh. Those guys got out there and proved why there are who they are. Two kings doing what they were born to do. I'd love to work with Ma$e to be honest. I told him, 'man I hope tonight's not our last conversation.' It's been cool, we kicked it and just went out and and got something to eat." (RapFix)



I don't know if Mase can sell platinum again, but if he aligns with Drake (not YMCMB) he has a shot at selling atleast Gold with an album. For those that don't know, Drake has his own movement now...his own label...OVO Sound, distributed by Warner Music Group. I think it will be cool to see Mase overthere, cos Drake has some very talented producers working with him...T-Minus, Noah "40" Shebib, Mike Zombie, and Boi-1da. It is up to Mase. Every label has shown interest in signing him at this point; Rick Ross's MMG, Good Music, Drake's OVO Sound, and even Diddy was trying to get him a new contract at Bad Boy Records.

Mase & Diddy (Puff Daddy) Perform Together After 9 Years

Back in the 90s, Mase and Puff Daddy (Diddy) were the ish in hip hop; and then Mase retired from rap music to become a Pastor. He has come and gone, and come and gone for the last couple of years now, but it seems like he is back for real this time. The last time Mase and Diddy performed together was in 2004, around the time Mase made his first comeback from retirement. After 9 years, they ignited the stage again earlier this week, performing at Drake's OVO Fest Concert. They went through classic's like as 'Mo Money Mo Problem', Victory, All About The Benjamins, I Need A Girl Part 2, and Feel So Good.

What a great day for Hip Hop music...especially for people like me who grew up partying to some of Mase and Puffy's hits. I was watching the video, and their is a part backstage where Drake was parleying with Puffy and Mase, like they were born on the same day. It's really inspiring. Drake was probably like 9 years old when Mase and Puffy were killing the music scene. But it means nothing now...just keep doing your thing, and you would one day be dining with all the people you look up to right now.

Ma$e Might be Signing With Kanye's G.O.O.D Music Label

There was rumour a couple of months back that Ma$e might sign with Rick Ross's MMG Label, but it looks like that didn't go down. Because Mase just tweeted that he got a G.O.O.D offer. And the way it is, he might just sign with them. I know Kanye West doesn't show interest in an artist if he is not ready to go all out to get the person, so, i guess it is safe to say that Mase would be officially signed with G.O.O.D Music in a couple of weeks.

From the look of tweet, it seems Mase was really enthusiastic about the offer. What is remaining should be for him to put pen to paper. As much as I would have loved him at MMG, I think this would be a very good move for him too. Kanye is building a really formidable rap team at G.O.O.D, so this would just be another juicy addition to the team...and all good for hip hop.



By the way, Ma$e performed at the Summer Jam Concert in New York a couple of days ago, and the reaction from the crowd shows he still has a lot of people checking for him. And, to all the younger generation of rap listeners that don't know who Mase is, or who Mase was; he was Puffy's (P.Diddy's) front man at Bad Boy after Biggie died in 97, and he had smash singles on radio all year long. He also was a ladies man back in the day... I know that got him in a lot of trouble back then though, before he gave his life to Christ.

Mase Says He is Taking The Limitations Off

When i heard Mase's Welcome Back album in 2004, i knew there were a lot things he must have wanted to talk about, but couldn't cos of what people expect from him. After going off in the early 00s to be a preacher, he couldn't just come back and start talking about "balling" and "women". But, i feel, even if he doesn't return fully to the old "murda mase" status, he can still remove the limits, and just speak his mind. That's why i always say it is so hard following all the rules in Christendom...its like you are imprisoned.



Anyway, read below what Mase has to say about taking the limitations off-

"Flex, let me tell you something before I go, though," Ma$e said, "I can only do music if I can do it the way I can do it. That's what be making me stop. I don't want to do music in a box. Like everybody say what I can't do and he can't say this, but if you need me to come do something for you, I've gotta be able to come to that event. So I'm taking all the limitations off. They gonna have to pray for me. I regret not giving myself room for growth. That's what I regret. I went so hard left that I didn't really leave no room to be an individual, a human being. ... I still put God over music any day. I just didn't give myself room to grow. I went from one extreme to another extreme." (Hot 97)


By the way, that conversation above was with Funk Master Flex on his HOT97 radio show earlier in the week. It is still not confirmed which label Mase would be signed on, but the likelihood are Rick Ross's MMG label, or back to Diddy's Bad Boy label.
