Afrobeats is a form of music done in West Africa, predominantly in Nigeria. It's feel good party music with good vibes, and it is currently taking over the world. Music from Afrobeats artists like Davido and Wizkid have been getting a lot of airplay on American local radio stations a lot lately, and I believe the genre of music is only going to get bigger in America in the next couple of years. It is kind of like how Dancehall music (from artists like Shabba Ranks, Patra, Diana King, Elephant Man, Beanie Man, Sean Paul, etc) blew up in America in the 90s/2000s. Basically, Afrobeats is the new Dancehall. During a recent interview on Hot 97 radio, legendary Dancehall musician, Sean Paul was asked what he thought about this, and he said...
"Definitely. It's got the hot spot...The energy is there. It's got the hot spot right now. And I'm loving that. You know, linking up with like...seeing artist like on the road, Davido. I see him and he is like, 'Yo bro!' Start telling me how I influenced him. My music influenced him. And it's like a full circle thing. You know what I mean. Umm. Also, I've done work with Wizkid. But we didn't put that out yet. Umm. I just love the vibe that has been happening in terms of dancehall influencing other genres. I believe that it helped with Reggaeton and I believe that it also helped with Afrobeat."
He is right. Dancehall influenced afrobeats...not the type of afrobeats that Davido does, but Wizkid was definitely heavily influenced by dancehall music, and you can hear it in his songs. But really, Nigerian afrobeats music hasn't reached it's full potential yet. I believe it would blow up bigger in America in the next couple of years. You have so much talent in Nigeria right now...Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Kiss Daniel, Tekno, Tiwa Savage, Patoranking, Niniola, Teni, Simi, Mr. Eazi, Duncan Mighty, the list is endless. At this year's Roc Nation Brunch, they were playing Afrobeats music from artists like Wizkid and Tekno, and Casanova was teaching people how to do Nigeria dance steps.
