Dave East Defines Mumble Rap

Mumble rap became very popular in the last ten years, thanks to rappers like Future and the Migos (Quavo, Offset, Takeoff) who got rich doing it, and made every new upcoming rapper want to do the same thing. It has gotten a lot of flack from hip hop purists over the years, but the sub-genre of rap music keeps getting bigger and bigger. During his recent The Bumbu Room interview, New York rapper, Dave East was asked for his definition of mumble rap, and he answered with...

"Mumble rap to me, the definition would be umm, no thought process behind it. Umm, not really no care. I feel. I feel like that was something like that got popular against lyricism. Like in people that was taking time to actually you know what I mean, put something worth while hearing...something you could rewind. I feel like that was such...I feel like mumble rap is such the opposite of that. It got hot. It got supper hot. You know what I'm saying."

That's an apt definition of mumble rap. Dave East is a rare breed of new New York rappers that has been able to stay off the mumble rap wave, and still enjoy some success. I wasn't really checking for him when he came out, but he has gotten better over the years. And his work ethic is second to none. He has dropped a project every year since he came on the scene in 2015, and he even had a collaboration album with Styles P last year titled Beloved.
