Dagrin; 2 Years Later

This day, 22 April, in 2010 a fast rising rapper from Nigeria passed away. He was involved in an accident after living a club late at night. His car crashed into an immobile vehicle on his way home. He didn't die at the spot, but  struggled for his life (at the hospital) a couple of hours before giving up.

I can actually remember that day like it was yesterday. I had earlier heard rumors about him having an accident in the morning, but i went out. I came back tired and went to bed. But i woke up later at night, and there an air of eeriness about and around me. So, i logged on to my computer, and the news was everywhere...Dagrin had died. I didn't believe it, even though it was the major news all over all the social media websites online.

I immediately came up here to my blog, and poured my heart out. Through the days that passed, a lot of other websites quoted some of the lines from that my original post...i guess they caught the reflections of my deep emotions in that article. Dagrin was an epitome of the saying- "you can become anything you want to be, as long as you put your mind to it, and believe in yourself." The painful side of his death was that he was at the peak of his career. He was doing something that had been done before, but in a great way. People never thought a rapper, delivering his lyrics in the local Yoruba dialect could go that far. At the time of his death, he was arguable the biggest star in the country.

Passing away at 23 and to have achieved so much is a testament to the greatness of his life. Dagrin would forever be remembered. And as jay-z implied in his Young Forever single- if you want to stay forever young, pour your heart into your art. Dagrin poured his heart into his music. He entertained us...he educated us...he told us his story. Never did i imagine that a rapper would have so crafty a wordplay rapping in Yoruba. Dagrin proved a lot of people wrong, and he went out great because he was loved by all. R.I.P Dagrin!
