Vector Having Problems With Record Label (YSG)

V.E.C is having problems with YSG. Of cos you know Nigerian rapper, Vector calls himself V.E.C, and is signed to YSG Entertainment (Young Shall Grow Entertainment). YSG was actually birthed from the popularly cross-country transport service, Young Shall Grow Motors Ltd. Obiora Obianodo, the first son of Chief Vincet Obianodo started the record label as an arm of his father's company, around the end of the last decade. Vector is the biggest act under the label, and it seems they are currently at war concerning their contractual agreements-





The disagreement between Vector and his label started a few months back after the rapper complained about his progress-rate and the label's nonchalant attitude towards his career and simply suggested more professional hands be employed to help his career, which the label took as a threat, and when they refused to heed to his suggestions, Vector hired hands he was paying personally.

He has been with the label for over four years and never asked to leave, all he asked for according to his camp was more work and results. Things actually got worse after Vector took a self-sponsored vacation to the US and returned to his record boss' anger, claiming he went to the States to sign a record deal. Continue...

  
Weeks after, Vector received and invitation letter from the Commissioner of Police of Lagos state and was summoned to the Area-E command (Festac). On getting there, he was presented with a "breach of contract" petition, claiming that he has engaged external hands to work for him. His parents got involved (as his dad is a retired police officer), and it was settled amicably.

Feeling unsafe and threatened, Vector surrendered the car and apartment provided for him by the label and acquired a replacement for himself. Thinking this was over, Vector went about his daily life (as lawyers were already handling the case) till the 10th of June. He was to be shooting his scene of the Ghetto RMX video by Shank, at his childhood neighbourhood (Mcarthy Barracks, Obalende, Lagos), when men of the police force came to seize him and his personal manager (Michael Umoru) and took them all the way back to Festac, this time it was a proper arrest and they were detained from 3pm till 10pm when his lawyers came through.

According to sources close to Vector, he has been receiving series of personal threats from the label, and he hasn't felt so safe and really did not want to talk to the press about it.

Just yesterday, his twitter account(@vectorYSG) with over 100,000 followers suddenly disappeared, and has been confirmed to be deactivated by his label. (lindaikeji.blogspot.com)




These kind of situations are inevitable. They always almost happens when two or more people come together to do business, especially, when one is bringing the money, and the other has the talent. No matter how talented Vector believes he is, talent is never enough, and their money most have helped him to where he is right now. Even though right now, the money might be nothing to him, at a point, it was everything. I know that they gave him a black coloured brand new Toyota Corolla  and an apartment to live in when they signed him, so that is definitely big investment. He needs to sit down and work out things with them. If they invested N10 million into him, they sure will want to recoup their money...and a little more, because they took a big risk investing in his career.

Vector The Viper

Vector the Viper, who is sometimes simply called Vector, or V.E.C, is a Nigerian rapper, who gained prominence in the late 00s in the Nigerian music scene. Vector is signed to YSG Entertainment. Before featuring on Bigiano’s Shayo remix, or General Pype’s Champion remix, he was killing it in the underground rap circuit with his freestyle abilities. He used to be in a group called the “Badder Boiz”, which featured two other members- Krystal & Blaze. Krystal left the clique before the group was even known, and Blaze left latter on to continue his studies abroad.

Vector has been known for showing his incredible freestyle abilities on Dj Jimmy Jatt’s “Jump Off” show, but what gets this emcee the most attention is his comparison to Jay-Z. I don’t know if this should be considered as a good or bad thing. Most of the time when he is interviewed and asked of his influences, he usually names Jay-Z last. But it is clear that he does not want attention drawn to the fact that he got his whole style and flow from the American rapper. Nigerians have been known in the past and present to copy and try to imitate foreign culture, so this would not be a surprise. If the issue of his originality is left on the table, then I boldly say that Vector The Viper is one of the finest emcees in Nigeria; the references to “finest” has nothing to do with looks, although he isn’t doing badly in that department also.

He dropped his first single in 2010, titled KILODE (feat Emmsong), where he tackles his biggest issue of being compared to Jay-Z. He takes time to question people’s continuous comparison with him and the American rapper, and doesn’t waste time to point out other Nigerian artists, who’s originality can be questioned. He mentions Durrela sounding like D.Banj, and General Pype sounding like Sean Paul. Although I doubt that would have been the best way to handle the situation, he managed to get his message across and make Nigerians neglect the fact that he sounds like jay-z, and appreciate what he has to offer as an artist.

He has another single with Tuface titled GET DOWN, which dropped around the time his debut album, State of Surprise, dropped. On the song with tuface, he shows his mastery of lyrics and versatility; getting along well on a party song, without losing or watering down his lyrical abilities. Although just a few years in mainstream hip hop in Nigeria, I can consider him on the list of top 5 rappers the country has to offer.

He has named his influences as Young Jeezy, 50 Cent, Ice Cube, Naughty by Nature, Nas, and of course JAY-Z. His debut album features other Nigerian artist like Emmsong, General Pype, Chuddy K, Tuface, Ade Piper, and Sista Soul. And he has said Shade Adu and Seal are his dream collaborators. The two of which are foreign artists with roots in Nigeria.
