a look at the billboard charts

It is that time of the week again when we view the rap albums on the billboard charts. Thank God there is a new rap album doing good numbers on the charts. B.o.b, the new rapper, debuted at the number one spot on the billboard top 200 albums chart this week.

I was really getting tired of quoting all the pittiful looking numbers that the rap albums on the charts were doing. Ludacriss had been leading the pack for weeks with his "battle of the sexes" album, but he has been bumped off the spot of the highest selling rap album for this week, by b.o.b.

B.o.b, the 21 year old georgia state origin, clamned the number one spot on the charts this week, with 80k sold. I did a research, and found out that the his sales is the second lowest numbers done by a number 1 album; the first is chrisste michelle's "ephinay" album, that sold 83k last year.

The young rapper, whose album titled "the adventures of bobby ray", featured two heavy weight rappers, "lupe fiasco" and "eminem", is signed to GRAND HUSTLE/ATLANTIC.

The next rap album on the charts this week that has the closest numbers to b.o.b's album is luda's "battle of the sexes" album which did 17k numbers this week; brining the total to 373k so far.

Veteran rap group, "cypress hill", that debuted that new album in 6 years on the charts last week, did  6,800 copies this week, brining the total to 25k. I think that is not encouraging, but they would just have to accpet the fact that every year, hiphop listeners and buyers of rap albums are getting younger; they getting into the young age group that don't know them.

Gucci mane mixtape, "burrprint2", did 5,800 copies this week, bringing the total to 34k. I think that is impresive for a mixtape.

The trio of ghostface, methodman and raekwon sold 3,400 copies of their collaborative effort this week. The "wu massacre" is now at a total of 64k copies sold so far.

The other notable rap album is that of "devin the dude", which debuted last week. The album "suite #420, sold 2,500 copies this week; bringing the total to 8,700 copies in 2 weeks.

That is all for now; let us hope that new rap albums with more encouraging sales drop in the future.

2. FLO RIDA- R.O.O.T.S(ROUTE OF OVERCOMING THE STRUGGLE.) (55, 356)

1. UGK- UGK 4 LIFE. (76, 600)

The dynamic duo of pim c and bun b(ugk) sit at the top this week, although, sadly, pim c passed on a couple of years ago, but this album had already been recorded before then, so there is one half posthumous in the group.

Flo rida is at second place. Dissapointing if you would ask me. With all the air play his single, "right round" has been getting, and also breaking records of selling over 600,000 digital copies in its first single, you would think he would sell more than he did. He is an example of a ring tone rapper.

Another dissapointing artist debuting on the charts this week is BOW WOW. Releasing his 6th studio album since he debuted in 2000 with his first album, "beware of dog", which sold almost 250k in its first week in stores. Bow wow doing 30k, recession or not, is a flop.

Albums to watch out for next week, are albums from mims and jadakiss(the last kiss). I would put jada at between 60k-100k. As for mims, i am a fan, but i think he does not have enough promotion right now. I put his first week sales close to what bow wow did.

T.I has finally been knocked off the top of the top spot of the billboard top ten rap albums chart, after several weeks of reign at that spot. The new number one is bad boy records rap artist, gorilla zoe. Coincidentally, today, 27th of march, is the day t.i heads off to serve his jail sentence. His album paper trail has done very good so far, and we wish him all the best. The album is at a total sales of 1,816, 700, almost double platinum.
Elswhere on the charts, we see cappone n noreaga entering the charts with their new collaborative effort, channel 10 which sold a lousy 4,100 copies.

BILLBOARD TOP 10 RAP ALBUMS(24/01/09)

10. DJ SCRIBLES- TOTAL CLUB HITS.

8. COMMON-UNIVERSAL MIND CONTROL.

7. SCARFACE- EMERITUS.(4,051)

4. LUDACRIS- THEATER OF THE MIND(14,860)

3. LIL WAYNE- CATER 3(15,335)

2. T.I- PAPER TRAIL. (20,178)

1. SOUND TRACK- NOTORIOUS. (42,946)

The soundtrack for the "notorious b.i.g" movie is at number one this week with a total of 42,946 copies in its first week. T.I comes in second as his paper trail album is gunning for double platinum status. The album has done a total sales of 1,596,820 since its release late last year.
Lil wayne stands at number 3 with 15,335 sold this week. Wayne is a couple of thousands away from tripple platinum status, as his grand total sales is at 2,933,533. Ludacris just hit gold this week, now at a total of 504,118. His fellow southside rapper, plies is at the number 5 spot with his third album in just two years in the game, and total sales for his darealist album is at 217,104.
The real king of the south, scarface is still slugging it out on the charts. He is at number seven this week with a weekending sales of 4,051, and a overall total sales of 93,995. That is not bad for a veteran that has been in the game for more than 20 years. I think scarface is one of the only rappers i know that has stuck to delivering staright up undiluted rap. No hype, no gimick, no flashy videos and he is still on charts with the new school. He drops an album titled "emeritus" when more than half of rap listeners do not have a good enough vocabulary to know the meaning of the word and still makes it to the charts, he deserves an aplaude.

I should add that the notorious big soundtrack has some unreleased big songs and also tracks from jay-z, jadakiss and some other rappers.
