Back in the 90s, before all the controversy with Benzino and Eminem, The Source Magazine's album ratings were actually very credible. The ratings determined what albums were classic material and which albums to check out. 5 Mics from The Source Magazine meant the album was A Classic. And best believe that they didn't give it to just any album; the rap album would really have to be exceptional. Even getting a 4 mics rating was a big deal back in the day. Then in the early 2000s, co-owner of the magazine, Benzino started beefing with Eminem, and he used undue advantage of the publication to try and assassinate Eminem's character. The Source lost some credibility at that point.
Things are back to normal now, and Benzino is nolonger in control at the magazine. Some Hip Hop albums got reviews years after they were released; some have gotten upgrades from 4 mics and 4 and half mics to 5 mics, but I am not listing those ones. Below are the 15 albums that got 5 mics ratings from Source Magazine at the point of their releases-
*People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (1990)- A Tribe Called Quest
*Let The Rhythm Hit' Em (1990)- Eric B. & Rakim
*AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (1990)- Ice Cube
*One For All1990)- Brand Nubian
*De La Soul Is Dead (1991)- De La Soul
*The Low End Theory (1991)- A Tribe Called Quest
*Illmatic (1994)- Nas
*Life After Death (1997)- The Notorious B.I.G
*Aquemini (1998)- Outkast
*The Blueprint (2001)- Jay Z
*Stillmatic (2001)- Nas
*The Fix (2002)- Scarface
*The Naked Truth (2005)- Lil Kim
*Trill OG (2010)- Bun B
*My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)- Kanye West
So, if you are a Hip Hop lover and haven't listened to most of the albums listed above, you should definitely do that.
