I used to always wonder who this guy was back when I would see his name at the back of Biggie's Life After Death album cover, and think, why is this guy called Clark Kent. Anyway, I later found out he was a DJ that went from DJing, to remixing people's songs, to making beats, to producing songs. He has produced songs for heavyweights like Jay Z, Mariah Carey, the late Notorious B.I.G, 50 Cent, and the list goes on.
In his recent interview with DJ VLad, he was speaking on his evolution from DJing to music production, and because of his constant collaboration with Jay Z earlier in Jay's career, he was asked by VLad when he knew Jay Z was going to be a great rapper.
"Well, I said it from when I first met him. When he was rhyming with Jaz (Jaz O). And, if you knew him, you knew that he didn't only rap that way. So, for me, it wasn't about the way he rapped, it was about the things he said when he rapped. Cos if you listened to anything that he did back then, it was super witty. It was super, witty, super tricky, double entendres, triple entendres. And to me, to be better, you had to be witty. You know what I'm saying...I noticed, between him and Jaz...To me, Jaz was the best. And then you meet this guy, and this guy is like just as good as Jaz, but then he has this other thing, like maybe like this...a different swagger. It just makes you go 'there's something different about this guy.'" (VLAD TV Interview)
To those that don't know, Jay Z was on the rap scene long before he dropped his debut album, Reasonable Doubt in 1996. As far back as the late 80s, Jay was like Jaz O's protege, and even appeared/rapped on Jaz O's Hawaiian Sophie song/video back in 1989. Then, he left Jaz for a while, and started hanging around and touring with Big Daddy Kane for a few years before he met Damon Dash and formed Rocafella Records. So, you see, this man called Shawn 'Jay Z' Carter had a lot of practice and trying times before he became one of the greats.
