I finally got to watch the N.W.A Biopic Movie, Straight Outta Compton yesterday, and I wasn't disappointed. With a budget of $28 million, the movie has already grossed $120 million in less than three weeks; that's more than 400% return on investment. It has been at the top of the box office chart two weeks straight. Nice!!! More money for Ice Cube's movie producing company, Cube Vision, which partnered with Legendary Pictures, New Line Cinemas, Crucial Films, and Broken Chair Flickz to make this movie.
Okay, enough of the money and technical talk, let's get to talking about the movie itself. I have to say this is one the best biopic movies of any musician (s) I have see. I guess because it is so raw and real. And it portrays the early lives of individuals that would go on to heavily influence the Hip Hop world. From Ice Cube turning his back on his group mates, because he felt cheated (he wrote most of Dre and Eazy's lyrics). To Eazy E going on to sign Bone Thugz N Harmony, one of the most successful rap groups ever. To Dre going to find snoop, Eminem, 50 Cent, Game, and now Kendrick Lamar. All of these have their roots in N.W.A being created by Dre, and Eazy E back in 1986-1987.
The movie has great cinematography, and the cast is just so on point. I would say, maybe they would have gotten someone else to play Dre's part...The guy that played his role got the demeanor, and was about Dre's height, but he was a little bit on the slim side. Even though Dre wasn't as chubby during the NWA days, he sure wasn't as skinny as the guy that was used. But the rest of the cast is great. Cool decision to use Ice Cube's biological son to play Cube in the movie. Eazy E, Suge Knight, and D.O.C's character's fit the part perfectly. All of them did a super great job in reenacting the lives of the NWA members from the 80s. They were so good I had goose bumps all over watching this movie.
And the decision to use Paul Giamatti (The Illusionist, 12 Years a Slave...) for the part of Jerry Heller was jackpot. Apart from being a great actor, he brought a lot of white Hollywood viewers with him. He did a great job, especially in the parts where the director was really mirroring the level of racism that was prominent at the time. There is a scene in the movie where police men ask the whole members of NWA to get on the ground, just for standing outside their studio, and being black men. Jerry Heller came out, being a white man, he had more respect, and the way he talked back to the police men is classic. That's one of my favorite parts of the movie. And yea, my other favorite part of the movie is the first 5 minutes of the movie, which is guaranteed to have you at the edge of your sit.
This is definitely a great movie, and one anyone would enjoy watching, not just rap music lovers. It has the angle of the struggles of young black men trying to make legitimate money from music, and the oppression they get from the authorities because of how they look, and what they rap about (which is really just a mirror of the community they live in). Racism, Emotions, Betrayal, Death, AIDS, Drama, Violence...All these elements make this movie the great movie it is.
