Nas just dropped a new project, The Lost Tapes 2 yesterday and I am going to attempt to predict what it would sell in its first week in stores. The first The Lost Tapes was released 17 years ago (2002), and it instantly became a fan favorite. It comprised of unreleased songs from his I Am (1999) and Stillmatic (2001) album recording sessions. In the same light, The Lost Tapes 2 comprises of unreleased songs from four album recording sessions- Hp Hop Is Dead (2006), Untitled (2008), Life is Good (2012), and Nasir (2018).
Nas's last released project was last year's Nasir album, and although it was met with mixed reviews, it still debuted at number 5 on Billboard's top 200 albums chart, and sold 77,000 copies first week. Although The Lost Tapes 2 is a compilation album, I believe it would sell just as well as the Nasir album, if not better, as this project has gotten good reviews so far. I predict that Nas's The Lost Tapes 2 album would sell between 60-80k copies first week...plus or minus. It will debut top 5 on Billboard for sure, because it is already top 5 on iTunes and on Amazon album charts.
What do you guys think?
I was off with this one. It ended up selling 23,000 copies first week. I guess people didn't treat it like a studio album. The first Lost Tapes was released in 2002 and it sold 70k copies first week...Godson was released the same year, just three months later, and it sold 156k copies first week. So, truly, people don't buy into compilation albums like full length albums.
