Legendary rapper, Nas yesterday used twitter to announce the release date of his 10th album Life Is Good. His over 600,000 followers on twitter went ecstatic, cos they had been waiting for this information for a while now. So, now, it's official, Life Is Good drops July 17 2012. In the past, Nas has released two albums in the month of July- 16 years ago, he released It Was Written on July 2; and 4 years ago, he released his Untitled album on July15.
I think it is cool that there are no Big artists dropping around that time. This will give Nas the power to capture most of the hip hop listening audience out there. I think, this is one of the most marketing Nas has done for any of his albums before drop date. Nas is on twitter informing his fans on the album's developments every now and then; his episode of VH1 Behind The Music just premiered last week, and it is being repeated on TV every couple of days; he was featured on a track off Nicki Minaj's just released second album; he has been promoting the video to his seconds single from the album, The Don for a couple of weeks now, and it drops this week Friday (April 27). I think all these moves will put Nas more in the public eye, without crossing the line to over-saturation.
As a Nas fan, i feel good for his recent moves. For him to have been in the game for 20 years, and still command this much attention, without the usual gimmicks that is used by a lot of rappers nowadays is a miracle. As he said in one of his recent tweets- "its not escobar's season, it's nasty nas season". He also put up a link for followers to view the cover-art of his latest single, Daughters, which will be dropping May1st. He has put out two singles for the street hip hop heads, it is time to put out an emotional track for the ladies.
I think Nas has an incredible promotion team behind him right now. Because, from tweets that i have read so far, more females are becoming fans' of his music. Whether it is just his music, or his looks, he sure has gained more female fans. From middle of last year (2011) to present time, he gained up 100,000 followers on twitter. And he currently gains up to a thousand followers daily. I like the fact that Nas has been able to do all these without compromising his music. Let the people that like him continue to like him for who he is, and the new people open their eyes to the greatness in his music. As Busta Rhymes said in 2009- "Nas is the best rapper in the world, period!"
