I guess it has something to do with the nature of rap music
and hip-hop in general. That braggadocio element in rap makes rappers lie...from
Big Daddy Kane, to Biggie, to Nas, to Jay-Z, to Jadakiss, to Lil Wayne, they
all lie in their raps. I can pick a verse from any of your favourite rappers
right now, and we can dissect it together and you would see all the exaggeration in their. I guess the way I see it is that, no matter how people
tend to downgrade rappers or demean them, they are still artists. Their art is the use of words to
paint pictures in a way that captivates listeners.
When I first heard Nas’s “Undying Love” track off his “I Am”
album, it was his story telling skills that caught my attention. His ability to
weave words together to tell a tale, make the words rhyme at the end, and still
stay on the story- that’s what got me. Of cos I didn't believe he did all he
said he did in that song, I just saw it as him being artistic and telling me a
story. This is the way I see rap music. Or all Eminem’s crazy stories from his
earlier albums. Eminem is one of the greats, but he definitely is a clown on
the mic, and you would be stupid to believe his lyrics.
A lot of young black
males have this infatuation with the so called “real rappers” that claim they
do all the things they rap about in their songs. And then when they hear about
that type of rapper catching a case, they say he is dumb and stupid. Or they
hear about a rapper fighting in the club or on the streets, or some ish like
that, and they say he is immature. It’s like these rap listeners don’t know what
they want.
Of cos, they are still a couple of rappers that have street
ties. The real smart ones have street connection, but give more priority to the
execute side of their music business. The ones that remain in streets never
really move up from there. So, what am I saying? There will always be the
rapper that lived the life, and sold the drugs and all that, but right now, if
their raps still contain "moving keys", they are speaking on their past, and not
their present. And most of them exaggerate these stories just to get these young
kids infatuated with their crack-cocaine tales.
As for the ones that just formulate stories of these lives,
they are not the first and wont be the last. If they can paint a good picture
with their tales, its all good. Do you
guys actually think Mr. Snowman, a.k.a Young Jeezy is still in the trap,
selling a kilo of cocaine for $17.5k as he claims? You listen to a Lil Wayne
verse, and all he seems to talk about is sex...do you think he has as much sex
as he says he does? Matter of fact, I listened to an interview of him a while
back, and he said he doesn't even have time for sex cos he is always on the road, or in the studio. Ain't that contradictory?
Or think of 50 Cent speaking on grimy ghetto shit when he lives in a 19 bedroom mansion in Connecticut. Or the fact that Dr. Dre promotes weed smoke so
much in his songs, but doesn't even smoke the herb.
The truth is, no one wants to hear the truth. That’s the
funny fact. People want to be lied to...they want to hear about EXTRAORDINARY
things, and unbelievable lifestyles, and if you are a good rap ARTist that can
paint the picture beautifully, you are in. Think about it- rappers like Talib
Kweli and Immortal Technique rarely lie in their raps and have a lot of positive
words for the people are ignored, and sell the list.
fuck da bullshit. we still want the real. jeezy not lying just becuz dat trap shit in the past. he still represent for dem and reminisce. immortal tech and talib are boring. theyre like feminists: yeah they talk good but what are they really doing other than talking and getting angry.
