It was my friend's birthday in November, and I was at a bar with the celebrant and a couple of our friends. I probably had been drinking a lot that week, and wasn't really that hyped about the liquor on the table. But then, my friend (the celebrant) said he was expecting one more person...and that the guy's girlfriend was a rapper named J'Bliss, and she was coming along with him.
Female rappers are rare in Nigeria, and being a crazy fanatic of rap music, I couldn't wait to meet her. To cut the long story short, she came around and got introduced to me. She told me her story, and the struggles faced by female rappers that want to make it in the Nigerian music scene without going pop.
After all the talk, I knew I couldn't allow her go without a freestyle, and she definitely didn't disappoint me. What can I say? She has definitely got the talent, and the desire. And in the current dispensation we are in in the Nigerian Music industry, she just needs some tweaks here and there, and she would feel the vacuum left by the few female rappers we have in the country.
You can check out her tracks, My Show and Awon Daa- here
