It appears this argument wont just go away. Their beef started in 2009, and 50 Cent exposed Rick Ross's past of being a Correctional Officer. This was enough to end any rapper's career, but Ross kept going. I guess the fact that Curtis wasn't able to crush him is the reason why there is still animosity between this two. And this has trickled down to their fans; they are always online arguing over who is richer, or who is hotter. You can't visit any Hip Hop site, or blog and not see the Ross fans and 50 Cent fans slugging it out.
I've been thinking of doing this for a while now, but I wanted 50 Cent to drop a new project that I can use as a measurement against what his opponent, Rick Ross has released. So, here we go. I am going to put Ross and 50 against each other in different categories, and see who comes out on top. Let's go!
Street Credibility
50 Cent wins here. We all watched the Get Rich Or Die Trying movie...we know how Boo Boo rolls. But even at that, it is not like Ross doesn't have any credibility in the streets. Put that C.O talk aside, the dude must have been doing something all those years after living the job. He worked as a correctional officer for 18 months; around 95/96, and that was it. That was TEN YEARS before anyone even heard of his songs. A whole 10 years before Def Jam signed him, and he was already rich when he got signed. I remember seeing his house like a year after his first album, and he was already living in a mansion. He definitely was doing something all those years after living his C.O job. But, still, Curtis Jackson wins here.
Finances
50 Cent wins here too. 50 is currently worth $140 million, and Rick Ross has a net worth of $50 million and counting. They are both doing very great financially. Hell, Ross just bought Evander Holyfied's 109 room mansion for $8 million (FACT); so this man might have money coming in from other sources that can't be exposed to the public.
Current Relevance in Hip Hop
Ross wins here. He currently has the best selling Rap album of 2014 (Mastermind is close to 400k sold), and he does a lot of collaborations. 50 Cent just dropped his Animal Ambition album, but before that, he hadn't released a studio album since 2009.
Current Album Sales
We can't count sales from ten years ago, so let's count sales from the last five years. 50 Cent's fourth studio album, Before I self Destruct was released in 2009, and sold 160,000 copies first week, and went on to sell a total of 512,000. Ross also dropped an album that same year. Rick Ross's third album, Deeper Than Rap sold 158,000 copies first week, and went on to sell 500,000 copies total. I guess they are even in this round.
So, next round has to be the albums they both released this year. Rick Ross dropped Mastermind in March, and it sold 179,000 copies first week, and has sold 355,000 copies so far. 50 Cent released his Animal Ambition album two weeks ago, and it sold 47,000 copies first week, and is currently at a two week total of 63k copies sold. It is obvious from this that it is not matching Ross's Mastermind sales. And to the people that would say Animal Ambition isn't a real album; well, he marketed it as such. And even if it wasn't, I don't think when Street King Immortal drops in September, it would do any better than Mastermind's sales. It would probably sell 80-100k first week, and max out at 250k total sold. So, Ross wins in this category.
Consistency
Ross wins here too. Since Ross dropped his first album, Port Of Miami in 2006, he has not gone off the Hip Hop scene. Year after year, if he ain't dropping a new album, he is dropping a hot mixtape, or a group album. He has remained on the radio for the last 8 to 9 years. There was a time 50 was having problems with his record label, Interscope, and couldn't put out an album, and was off the scene for several months. Okay, let's do it this way. In the last ten years, how many albums has 50 dropped versus the ones Ross has dropped. Between 2004- 2014, 50 Cent has dropped 4 albums, and Rick Ross has dropped 6. Ross wins.
Mic Skills in 2014
Get Rich Or Die Trying was a great album, and I can remember how much impact it made when it dropped, but this is not 2003. And unless you are a 50 cent stan, you know he hasn't grown musical since The Massacre. His album sales even speak volumes for that. He sold 5.2 million copies of The Massacre in 2005, and four years later, in 2009, he could only sell half a million of his Before I Self Destruct album; what happened to the 4.7 million fans?
With a very unbiased mind, just listen to Mastermind (2014), and then listen to Animal Ambition (2014), and tell me which is better. Be honest with yourself.
Longevity
50 Cent wins here. 50 has been in the game for more than a decade, and even the times when he couldn't release music, he still found a way to be a topic of discussion. Ross has been in the game for just about 8 years.
Hmm! Rick Ross is the winner; 4-3. Sorry if you don't like my analysis, I was as transparent and unbiased as possible. You can drop comments on your opinions below.

Nigga I'v been followin ur blog for some months now. I know u r a ross fan & if u r not goin to b unbiased enuff, then articles like dis should b written on a white piece of paper, folded, then kept @ d back of ur black pant's pocket. It pissed me off that u wrote dis article to suite ur own self & not fair enuff for ur readers. 50 won in all category but one-consistency..hw can u judge album sales by just 5yrs? Forgetin dat d fake ass police has never gone platinum all his life? Would u have assessed Nas dis way? I'm sorry to bust ur bubble but dis is lazy journalism. May be u should learn d art.
ReplyDeleteOkay. Thanks for this comment. I am glad you at least dropped a comment. Yes, I am a Ross fan, and no this is not a website. It is a blog, and I don't have to learn journalism to keep my blog going. And about being biased, how was I biased? Point out the place. I gave Curtis Jackson all his right due. And you calling Ross a police man just signifies that you are a 50 Cent fan who has grown to hate Rick Ross over the years, so if you claim I am biased, you are also biased. 99.9% of the Blogs/Websites out there are biased against Ross; you know that, right? So, if I chose to bring out his good qualities, instead of focusing on all his bad qualities like you all do, am I guilty?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the contribution; I appreciate it.
