Some Hip Hop Facts You Might Not Know

I was meant to put this up on Saturday, but my internet connection has been messing up. Anyway, here it goes...11 Hip Hop Facts You Might Not Know.

11. Drake has surpassed Jay-Z to become the rapper with the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard R& B/Hip-Hop chart. Jay has 9 No. 1's, Drake currently has 10...and counting.

10. Lil Kim and Missy Elliot are the only female rappers that have at least 3 platinum selling albums. Lil Kim- Hardcore (1996), Notorious Kim (2000), La Bella Mafia (2003). Missy Elliot- Supa Dupa Fly (1997), Tha Real World (1999), Miss E...So Addictive (2001), Under Construction (2002)

9.  In 1991, Gabriel Gravenstuk from The Source Magazine praised DMX in his "Unsigned Hype" column that highlighted unsigned hip-hop artist. In 1992, Columbia Records signed DMX to their subsidiary label, Ruffhouse, who released his debut single "Born Loser". He didn't release a debut album (It's Dark And Hell Is Hot) till 6 years later, in 1998 under Def Jam Records.

8.  Just a few rappers have been able to drop 2 solo studio albums in the same a year. Tupac- All Eyez On Me (February 1996), and Makaveli- The Don Killuminati: 7 Day Theory  (November 1996). Nas- "I Am" (April 1999), and "Nastradamus" (November 1999). DMX- "It's Dark And Hell Is Hot" (May 1999), and "Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood" (December 1999).

7.  Back in 1992, Sean "Puffy" Combs was A&R at Uptown Records when he signed Biggie to the label. He got fired months later. But because of his enthusiasm for the music business, Sean Combs formed his own label, Bad Boy Records in 1993, and got Biggie on his team again.

If Puff wasn't fired from Uptown Records, he probably wont have started Bad Boy when he did, and he wouldn't have marketed Biggie the way he did, and we probably wont have been blessed with one of the greatest rappers in Hip Hop history.

6.  Tupac was named after Tupac Amaru, Peruvian revolutionary who led an indigenous uprising against Spain and was subsequently executed. Isn't it funny that Tupac's life is almost in the same fashion. He was a revolutionary rapper, who got assassinated.

5.  Eminem's Marshall Marthers LP (2000) is the fastest selling Hip-Hop album in history. The album sold 1.76 million copies in its first 7 days in stores. Snoop Dogg held this record for 7 years prior to this with his Doggystyle album, which sold 800,000 copies in its first week out.

4.  Biggie got married to Faith Evans after knowing her for just 5 weeks.

3.  Not only is DMX the only rapper, he is the only musical artist in history to release his first 5 albums, and have them all debut at No. 1. "It's Dark And Hell Is Hot" (1998), "Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood" (1998), "And Then There Was X..." (1999), "The Great Depression" (2001), and "Grand Champ" (2004) all debuted at No.1.

2.  Contrary to popular belief, Jay-Z doesn't have 11 straight number one albums. He has released 11 solo studio albums, but his first two didn't debut at number one on the Billboard chart. The two other albums he counts to make him have 11 number one albums are his collaborative album with Linkin Park (Collision Course- 2004), and his collaborative album with R.Kelly (Unfinished Business- 2004)

1.  Nas is the only rapper that has had number one albums in 3 decades..."It Was Written" in 1996, "Hip-Hop Is Dead" in 2006, and his latest, "Life Is Good" (2012).

I guess the world loves drama. Atlanta rapper, and G-Unit signee, Shawty Lo has a new Reality TV Show that would be airing next year- 2013. The show will feature all his 10 baby mamas, and 11 of his kids. Ain't that a spectacle? 10 baby mamas? Men! This dude is something else. I guess that's why he got the gig for the show.

All My Babies's Mamas is the working title of the show, and would be featured on Oxygen Network. Read more below-

D'Banj Apologizes For Long Trek To Koko Concert Venue

2 days ago (Thursday 27th December), D'Banj had his Koko Concert at the Eko Atlantic venue. Idris Elba was the host, and international stars like Tinnie Tempah, Big Sean, and Pusha T performed at the concert. Nigerian artiste such as Ajebutter 22, Iyanya, Naeto C, K Switch, Ice prince, and dozen others also performed. But, the major setback of the show was the location; the stage was too far away from where cars were parked, and people had to trek a long distance. Other than this, the concert went well. Regardless, D'Banj hit twitter to apologize to his fans and everyone that attended his Concert for the inconveniences.

Read the tweets from the bottom, up.

And below is a pic of D'Banj and Big Sean cruising around town in the Koko Master's Aston Martin...before the concert.

T.I Names His Top 5 Favourite Albums of 2012

T.I dropped his 8th album (Trouble Man) last week, and it's not doing too badly in the market. In a recent interview, he spoke on his top 5 favourite albums of 2012. It's not a surprise that he would name his album...and also his signee's on that list.

"The first one I can think of is B.o.B's Strange Clouds," he said. "It's his sophomore album and oddly enough, I think this album was in some ways better than his first one. I think that he has definitely showed growth and evolution in his creative spirit. So I hear it and I acknowledge it and I salute it."

The King of the South also went the standard route and chose K. Dot's major label debut, explaining that he raps like he has an old soul. "Kendrick Lamar's project was something that I expected it to be good, but I never expected it to be that good. So I think that the thought or the fact of the matter that he took me by surprise so much is probably what propelled him so far up over the top of my favorites. It sounds like he's in the present but speaking with a voice from the past. He got a mid- to late-'90s flow on him, but his subject matter is present day. And his skill set is futuristic. That just provides for a wonderful collection of strengths that allow me to like him so much."
Additionally, T.I. settled on Meek Mill's Dreams & Nightmares, G.O.O.D. Music's Cruel Summer and, of course, his own album Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head. (hiphopdx.com)

Bank W Speaks On Relationship Status

Sometimes, it is real hard for artiste to get a girl that truly loves them when they are at their peak. It is hard for them to find someone that can understand the kind of life they live, and ride along. That's why you see artiste like D'Banj still single when at a marriageable age; MI is still single; the P-Square twins are in their mid 30s, and still not married (although they do have baby mamas)...and Tuface got married just recently. In a recent interview, Banky W, who clocked 31 this year, speaks on why he is still single, and available.

What is your relationship status now?
I am single and available.

You are single and available, so how do you handle your female fans?
I just appreciate them; they are fantastic; you can’t get too caught up. You can’t let it get into your head. You can’t indulge in a lifestyle where you start to slip up because you are single. But I do appreciate them and try to live up to everybody’s expectations.

I remember you said you wrote the song, You are the only one for me, because you were hurting at the time. Are you still hurting now that you have attained a marriageable age?
No, I don’t think so, because marriage is the most important decision of one’s life. It can make or break you. So, I think one should never rush into it. So, you have to have the right state of mind, you have to be in the right state physically. And more importantly, you have to find somebody that is on the same page with you at that level; that’s a challenge. The truth is that in my business it is very hard to find somebody, because of what is going on now and how fast your life is. Everyone is asking, even my parents are asking where is the girl; but hopefully, I will find the right person soon. It is not something I am afraid of, it’s not something I am running away from, it will definitely happen.

What’s your ideal woman?
I don’t think there is anything such as an ideal woman, I think the perfect woman for me, hopefully, when I see her I will know. (lindaikeji.blogspot.com)

Kendrick Lamar Speaks On His Favourite Albums Of 2012

In a recent interview with Google Play, the new rapper on top, Kendrick Lamar shared what and what albums where his favourite in 2012, and what made them so special.

"One of my favorite albums of 2012 will be Nas Life is Good. The reason why I chose this album was simply because Nas kept his longevity, kept his creativity, kept his storytelling at an all-time high," he said. "Given the fact that he's been in the game so many years, still being able to come fresh and come new to where it's among the elite artists in the game."

"Another one of my favorite albums of 2012 would have to be Frank Ocean's album, reason given is because you don't hear too many male vocalists or vocalists, period, giving storytelling inside of their music. I think it's pretty dope to bring that part of the game back. As far as singing and rhythm and blues, it's a great album, great concepts, a body of work. That's what it's about in the game. I can respect that."

Wyclef Admits To Playing A Role in Fugees Breakup

Fugees (Pras, Lauryn Hill, and Wyclef) sold millions of records in the mid 90s, and were very successful as a hip hop group. But they broke up at their peak. And, as much as fans and record execs tried to get them back together, the group never recorded another full length album after their highly successful The Score (1996) album. In a recent interview, Wyclef spoke on the role he played in breaking the group up.

"I'm sure he (Pras) definitely blame me. And if you go back to the old articles one time, you know where Pras was like, ''Clef is the cancer of the Fugees.' You remember when he said that?" he said. "At the time, you've gotta understand his frustration though. It was more like, I really wanted this thing to work and you shouldn't have messed with the girl. Matter of fact, didn't I warn you about messing with the girl?'"
'Clef continued by stating that as a man, he takes the blame for dismantling something that was going well for others. He said that he admitted to the affair beacuse he wants to be looked at as a human being.
"Now, as a man and looking back, definitely take blame in the sense of having fell for Lauryn at the time," he said. "It was important that I explained it in the sense of vulnerability, meaning not as 'feel sorry for me' type of dude but as human beings. At times, we lust and for me, it was not even lust at that time because it was spending too much time anyway. In the book, I describe at that time, it was more of a muse type of relationship." Meek Mill Drops Cassidy Diss Track- "Repo"

Their beef has been growing gradually since the beginning of the year, but it was more on twitter, until Cassidy dropped a diss track (Me, Myself, & iPhone) going at Meek Mill last week. Now, Meek has replied with his own Cassidy diss track titled "Repo". I think the points Meek has over Cass right now is that he is more successful than Cass, and he used that as armour on this track. There are definitely some below-the-belt jabs on this track, but the thing is that that's all Meek has on Cass...now, it is Cassidy's turn, and things will definitely get ugly on wax. I hope Cassidy doesn't disappoint.

Check out some lines from the track below-

"Really? F*ck 'em 'Condom Style'?/Get your jig on/You a clown a** n*gga, put your wig on," Meek raps. "N*gga I be going ham 'til the pig gone -- broke n*gga we should put you in a body cast/Real n*gga all I know is get a lotta cash/I took you hatin' n*gga's place that's why you probably mad/My story, all guts, glory/Posted on the block, glock 40 tucked on me -- why you suckers hatin' and talkin' 'bout what I'm making/And I be out in Jamaica and balling like I'm a Laker." ("Repo")
He also goes on to flaunt his current buzz and taunt Cass about his estranged relationship with producer Swizz Beatz. (sohh.com)
"What you made this year, what you worth n*gga," Meek continues. "I dropped Dreams & Nightmares, I made 'Church' n*gga, I did 'I'ma Boss,' young'n set the summer off/Now these old n*ggas mad at me 'cause they fallin' off/Get your hate on, Cass, and we ain't talkin' Larceny 'cause they all trash/Your goons ain't riding with you 'cause they all mad/You ain't never put no food up on AR Ave/My dog caught a body for you, d*mn, he ain't eatin' from it/Now you mad at Swizz 'cause you can't get a beat from him/Once my n*ggas come at you dog, we gonna keep coming/Weird ol' Forrest Gump a** n*gga, better keep running." ("Repo")

Pics of 2 Chainz Cars (2012)

I saw an interview of 2 Chainz where he said he was considering buying the Maybach 62, and when he spoke to Nelly about it, Nelly advised him not to. Nelly told him instead to look into buying a tour bus, which can generate money. 2 Chainz listened to Nelly, and bought the bus...and now he has a different perspective on dishing out hundreds of thousands of dollars on cars. He buys moderately expensive cars, and doesn't have too many.

He has an Aston Martin Rapide ($210,000); and his favourite ride, a Porsche Panamera ($100,000). Check out the pics below in the order I have listed them above.

2 Chainz Speaks On Being Humble On The Road To Success

A lot of people know 2 Chainz now, but they really don't know about his long journey to success. Some don't even know that he once went by the name, "tity boi", and was in a rap group called Playaz Circle. He finally became a super star rapper at 36, after a decade long road to success. One ingredient he says he incorporated in his life was humility.

He was signed to Def Jam in his Playaz Circle days, but got dropped from the label after he didn't attain the level of success they expected. He is back with them, and says they are listening now....they are answering his calls. That made him bring up the topic of being humble...

The decision to sign with them was at least partially driven by spite. “I had a lot of leverage with them, and it felt good to come back in there and say, Hmm…you listening this time?” he says. “They answer the phone calls now.” The ability to say I told you so isn’t just central to 2 Chainz’ worldview, it seems to be the primary fuel for his grind. “If you dogged out the intern, you’re gonna feel funny once he becomes the CEO,” he says. “So I carry that with me. I say what’s up to the parking attendant on the way to a meeting. In Atlanta, a parking attendant [will one day] own a club. And he’ll charge your ass 400 dollars to walk in the mother-fucker.” For him, humility is strategic. “A lot of people didn’t
see my vision, didn’t rock with me. They walked past me and didn’t speak, but I’d be like a female if I held grudges,” he says. “My revenge is them asking me to do a song. I charge the dog
shit out of them.”

lol! That's a good revenge.

Wale Speaks On Folarin Mixtape

Although he wasn't born in the country, Wale's parents are Nigerians (of the Yoruba tribe) who left the country sometime in the 70s. Wale has had a successful rap career so far, and is currently signed to Rick Ross's MMG label. He is 2 albums in, and is working on an early 2013 release date for his 3rd. Before that comes, he wants his fans to hold on to something...which is his new Folarin mixtape. For those that don't know, Folarin is his surname.

Below is what he had to say about the mixtape-

Folarin mixtape is really a culmination of every mixtape that I’ve ever had, together,” Wale revealed. “Because the album they might not be so lucky. I wanna do the album for me. This is the second time I’m announcing it, but I’m doing a Go-Go album after my album. And when I say Go-Go I don’t mean like cheesy Go-Go. It’s gonna be sequenced. It’s gonna be me probably rapping only 40-percent on the album, but getting the sound out.”
Wale also addressed his reactions to negative criticism, stating that he cares highly about the opinions of fans especially since his music goes through so many different “layers” before it’s released.
“One of the things [people] don’t understand is the only reason why I give a fuck is because I give a fuck. You know what I’m saying…There’s a lot of people that I see, they get up in the morning, they don’t give a fuck about what they fans think, they don’t give a fuck about what their managers think,” said the rapper. “I’m more so like a collaborative nigga. As far as like my fans. That’s why I let them affect me. That’s why I’ll listen to a fan, an honest opinion of ‘I don’t like that Wale.’ I wanna know why because I feel like my shit goes to four, five layers before nigga’s even hear it…It goes through so much. I feel a way if nigga’s don’t like it cause I already got it through so many levels. And I care about my fans. This tape is all for the fans.” (hiphopdx.com)

Skillz Drops 2012 Rap-Up

For those that don't know, Skillz is a veteran rapper in the game that releases a Rap Up track every year end. On the tracks, he speaks on all that happened in the music industry (and American entertainment industry in general) in that particular year. If you are really into hip hop music, you must have heard one of his yearly Rap Ups. Anyway, he just released the one for this year- 2012. You can check out some lyrics from it below-

"Common threw a shot at Drake but he ain't wanna catch it," Skillz raps. "Giants won the Super Bowl plus that whole corny madness, Linsanity had New York on fire like wasabi/And you couldn't go anywhere, without hearing about Blue Ivy/Congrats to Jay and B, for adding to they crew/I mean why was y'all so shocked, ain't that what married people do?/And I'm still in my hoody 'cause this violence ain't stopping/Hope we see justice for the young and Trayvon Martin" ("Rap Up 2012")

"Kim and Kanye, they had us all tripping/Mary J. Blige was out here singing for chicken," he rapped. "Drake met Chris Brown with a bottle in-between/D'Angelo came back, LeBron got that ring/Man shout-outs to D-Wade, but I ain't need to see, that Chris Bosh facial on national tv/We doubted it at first, but couldn't change that channel/We all got caught up, 'Love & Hip Hop ATL'" ("Rap Up 2012")

Big Sean Speaks On "Hall Of Fame" Album

G.O.O.D Music artist, Big Sean is working on an early 2013 release for his second album, "Hall Of Fame", and shared some words on the album recently. I always see him as that new artist with the dope flow, even if he is not deep with the lyrics. Well, sometimes, you just want to listen to some fun music.

Read more on the news below-

While speaking with MTV News, the G.O.O.D. Music rapper revealed that thus far the artists and publications he’s played the album for have “been blown away” by it.
“Everybody I've been playing it for has been shocked. From rappers, from ‘Ye. I played it for Cole to No I.D. Billboard magazine and all these different people and everybody’s just been blown away,” Big Sean revealed. “So you know I'm not trying to hype it up or talk it up, but it's obviously the best work I've done and I'm excited about it.”

In the months leading up to the release of Hall Of Fame, Big Sean has gone on to release a handful of inspirational video blogs that touch on how he’s gotten to where he’s at in his career and what he plans on doing to further his position in music.
He also shared that he hopes the video blogs help and encourage fans to be successful in their own lives.
“The album Hall Of Fame you can just expect a roller coaster, just so many different feelings man. I’ve been doing video blogs lately, giving people inspiration and incite on my life about how I got to where I’m at and how I’m getting to where I’m going,” said Big Sean. “I title them ‘Imagination,’ ‘Fear,’ ‘Reality’ and just talk about different aspects. So hopefully they can take what I learned, put that in their own life, and be happy and successful themselves…I feel like we all deserve to be rich.” (hiphopdx.com)

True, we all deserve to be rich. That's what I always try to tell people. Just know what your purpose is, and make it your one sole definite purpose. There will be ups and downs, but you sure will get there.

Meek Mill Responds To Cassidy Diss

Meek Mill and Cassidy have been going back and forth of late, more on twitter than on wax. But, yesterday, Cass dropped a new track, "Me, Myself, & iPhone", where he dissed Meek Mill directly, on the last verse. Now, Meek Mill has brought back the battle challenge he put forward to Cassidy (in which he backed-out after Cass accepted) a couple of weeks ago.

Blackface Speaks On Writing Tuface's Hit Song, African Queen

Tuface, Blackface and Faze came into the Nigerian music industry as The Plantashun Boys more than a decade ago, and then after a very successful album, they went their separate ways. This is very typical of groups, and even though they appeared to be a little tension when the split was fresh, they are matured about it now. But, going back to when they first split up, it is funny to know that the song that actually blew Tuface up big time was written by his ex-plantashun boys member, Blackface.

In a recent interview, Blackface spoke on his joint ownership of the rights to the song (African Queen), and how the song came about.

I know the song has generated a whole lot of revenue. Right now, I and Tuface have joint ownership of that song. But from the inception it was not like that. My publisher, BMI had to find a way to work that out. All the funds the song has been generating I’m supposed to have 50 per cent of it, which I’m not getting and I don’t just know what is happening. There is even a situation whereby somebody in Jamaica sang African Queen and some other persons like that of which I was not aware. Nobody told me that he was going to sing my song. So, there are some issues that I and Tuface need to sit down and iron out, but Tuface is difficult to get on the table. So I have decided to do it on my own. Surely, with time we’ll get to the root of the matter because we both have 50 per cent right to the song.
That means Tuface has been cheating you
Yes, because I was not being paid and you know the way it is in Nigeria, the ideology is that because one is not on one particular record label they won’t put his name to a song he wrote just because they don’t want to promote the person. But the fact is that your intellectual property remains you intellectual property, nobody can take that away from you.

But you sang your own version of the song
Yes, I have a reggae version of African Queen, which I’m still going to re-record. I did that because there was a time some people were trying to claim ownership of the song.

Did you ask him to include the song in his album?
Yes, we wrote it together and I gave him permission to do so because when he was recording his album we were still living in the same apartment. I found out that the album was not making any sense, so I told him that the only thing that will allow the album to make sense is to include the song African Queen which we both wrote. But I didn’t say he should take away my own right. That is the rider. For the fact that I wrote a song for you to perform does not mean you should claim it and deprive me of my own right.

Who came up with the idea of the song?
It was actually one Idoma man called Willy Walkman. He told us to do a song for his soap opera and the title of the soap opera was African Queen that we should write a theme song for the soap. We started writing in earnest. Then one day he just came and was like, we are not serious about it that he didn’t want to be our manager again not knowing that we were already doing what he asked us to do. That was how he threw us out. So African Queen was Willy’s idea. (lindaikeji.blogspot.com)

Some Hip Hop Facts You Might Not Know

I said I would bring this every Saturday, but I was the best-man at my cousin's wedding last weekend, and couldn't put this up, so this is it- 11 hip hop facts you might not know. This is some pretty informative ish. Have fun being edu-tained.

11. Back in 95-96, Cypress Hill and Ice Cube had beef that escalated to the streets. The beef  jumped off from Ice Cube jacking some of Cypress Hill's (especially, member B Real's songs) songs after they played him their songs in the studio. An L.A rapper named Solo, and friends' of B Real caught up with Ice Cube at a Red Light, knocked him out in their altercation, and snatched Ice Cube's West Side Connection chain, which B Real put up at Cypress Hill concerts. The beef was squashed in January 1997.

10. Contrary to what a lot of people might think, Twista actually came on the scene before Bone-Thungs-N-Harmony. Back in the mid 90s, when Bone were blowing up the scene with their fast delivery and harmoney flow, twista accused them of jacking his style. But Bone Thugz members let it be known that their styles actually are different- Twista goes da da da ra-ta-ta-ta, and doesn't stop, but Bone's style is infused with the harmony. They squashed their beef in the late 90s when a mutual friend of both friend's got Twista and Bone to do a tracktogether.

7.  Prior to their now legendary beef, Suge Knight and Puff Daddy were friends who often held parties together and hung out on plenty of occasions. If Knight visited New York in 1994 he’d drop by Bad Boy’s office. If Puffy traveled to Los Angeles “he would come pick me up and we’d hang out” Puffy once said.

6.  In 1993, Death Row records was able to generate more than $75 million dollars and release two of the biggest selling hip hop albums of all time (Dr. Dre's The Chronic, and Snoop's Doggystyle album) in just a 10 month span. Vibe Magazine once described Death Row “as the most profitable, independently owned African American hip hop label of all time.”

5.  Eminem is the only rapper alive that has two albums that have attained Diamond status...that is, sold over 10 million copies. His 2000 Marshall Marthers LP, and his 2002 The Eminem Show both have sold diamond individually.

4.  Nas Ghost-wrote the hit, "Getting Jiggy With It" (1997) for Will Smith.

3.  Mary J Blige introduced The L.O.X (Jadakiss, Sheek Louch, Styles P) to Puffy back in the day, and was instrumental to them signing to Bad Boy Records.

1.  Young Noble of the Outlawz who is from New Jersey gave Tupac a copy of Illmatic in the fall of 1994, Pac quickly became a fan and respected Nas for his artistry. In 1996 Tupac released his track about a man infatuated with his gun ‘Me and My Girlfriend’, which, according to the Outlawz was heavily influenced by Nas’ conceptual song ‘I Gave You Power.
