Tupac: The Greatest Dead Rapper

First of all, before i start explaining why i think Tupac is the greatest dead rapper, i have to clarify something; i am not the type that believes Tupac and Biggie are the greatest rappers ever, and that no one can be better than them. In fact, i detest people that have that opinion. I listen to rap music; i love hip hop, and i have been an enthusiast of it since 1994. When i make a statement, i always try to back it up with facts. I guess i have gotten my point across, so, let's go.

Hip Hop is a relatively young genre of music; it is not even up to 50 years. Hip Hop blossomed in the 70s and 80s, as a way the Negroes of that time expressed themselves, whether in a political nature, their lifestyles, or just how they had fun. Even though it is relatively young compared to the other genre's of music, a lot of rappers have lost their lives along the way. I guess that has to do with the lifestyle of majority of the artist involved in this type of music. There is a long list from Eazy E, to Tupac, Guru, Big L, O.D.B, Big Pun, Pimp C, Biggie...All these rappers blessed us with their gifts; some had their lives caught shut before we could really get much from them, and others stayed around longer.

I would like to make a point that this post is on the Greatest of the bunch, but not necessarily the one everyone considers the best. I am writing to tell you why i consider Tupac the greatest dead rapper. Biggie is always compared to Tupac when it comes to the greatest, dead or alive. Personally, i think Big was a great rapper in his time, everything after that is just hype...no disrespect to his fans. Biggie was the type of rapper that had mass appeal; he had wordplay and a smooth flow. Puffy (Diddy) marketed him well to the public, and his death and feud with the late Tupac Shakur escalated his status. Majority of the people that say Biggie is the greatest can't even quote one line from any of his songs...they mostly just say it because everyone says it...or because Canibus said it on that 2nd Round K.O song.

Eazy E is a Westcoast Legend, but still , he didn't reach the status of a Biggie or Pac when he went solo. Him, Dre, Ice Cube and the other members of NWA made great music in the late 80s to early 90s, but he just wasn't the same when the group disbanded. Not to mention the fact that Ice Cube wrote all his lyrics when they were in NWA.

Big Pun i consider the most underrated dead rapper. On the mic, i personally think he was more of a beast than Biggie was. He always had that song for the ladies, but when you go deep down and listen to his albums, you know the dude was a lyrical monster. No wonder Nas said- "since pun passed, he was the last shinning sun i could feel". I feel the same about Big L. In fact, it is worse with Big L, because, till this day, people don't know who Big L is. This dude was a multi-syllabic monster...with crazy story telling abilities. Thank God for Fat Joe featuring him on a track off that True Story Terror Squad Album. Although that was a posthumous guest appearance, it got me to notice the guy.

All these rappers mentioned above were great on the mic while they were alive, but non touched people like Pac did. I tell people all the time that you can't compare Pac and Big cos Pac made timeless music. You can even forget all his works that came out after his death, just pick up a 1995 album like Me Against The World, then you will know why he is the greatest. He poured his heart into the music. He lived for music. I guess that's why he had so much material after his death. He released 6 studio albums while alive, and 8 since he passed in 1996. He has sold a cumulative album sales of over 75 million copies. He held the record of the highest selling rapper, till Eminem got that title recently.

Just recently, a Hologram of him performed alongside Dr Dre and Snoop Dog at the Coachella concert, and his sales spiked again. This is just a testimony of this man's greatness. No other dead rapper still influences rappers like he does. No other dead rapper still commands the kind of respect he does. And this is not about hype, this is about the passion he put into his music. For this, i say, Tupac is The Greatest Dead Rapper.

Mase Says He is Taking The Limitations Off

When i heard Mase's Welcome Back album in 2004, i knew there were a lot things he must have wanted to talk about, but couldn't cos of what people expect from him. After going off in the early 00s to be a preacher, he couldn't just come back and start talking about "balling" and "women". But, i feel, even if he doesn't return fully to the old "murda mase" status, he can still remove the limits, and just speak his mind. That's why i always say it is so hard following all the rules in Christendom...its like you are imprisoned.

Anyway, read below what Mase has to say about taking the limitations off-

"Flex, let me tell you something before I go, though," Ma$e said, "I can only do music if I can do it the way I can do it. That's what be making me stop. I don't want to do music in a box. Like everybody say what I can't do and he can't say this, but if you need me to come do something for you, I've gotta be able to come to that event. So I'm taking all the limitations off. They gonna have to pray for me. I regret not giving myself room for growth. That's what I regret. I went so hard left that I didn't really leave no room to be an individual, a human being. ... I still put God over music any day. I just didn't give myself room to grow. I went from one extreme to another extreme." (Hot 97)

By the way, that conversation above was with Funk Master Flex on his HOT97 radio show earlier in the week. It is still not confirmed which label Mase would be signed on, but the likelihood are Rick Ross's MMG label, or back to Diddy's Bad Boy label.

First Week Sale Prediction of B.O.B's Strange Clouds Album

B.O.B's second album, Strange Clouds drops in a couple of days, next week Tuesday (May 1st) to be precise, and i will attempt to predict what it would sell in its first week out. His first album (The Adventures of Bobby Ray) dropped in 2010, and it did 84,000 copies in its first week. He had a radio hit then with Airplanes, but he was still quite unknown. He has gained more fans over the years, and has kept to what he does best. I can't put a name on his type of hip hop, but he is sure in a lane of his own.

The second single off the album, "So Good" is at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 tracks chart. I would say Strange Clouds would sell between 150- 270k copies in its first week.

Third Week Global Sales of Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Album

Nicki Minaj's second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded has finally gone Gold globally. The album sold 87,000 copies this week, being its third week, to now be at a total of 568,000. Congratulations to her and her record label. Please note that these are global sale numbers, and not domestic sales. She is not Gold in the U.S yet, but she has gone Gold worldwide. Pink Friday:Roman Reloaded has sold a total of 383,000 domestically.

A Gold status is attained when an album sells up to 500,000 copies. Platinum is the next step for her, and Platinum status is when an album reaches 1,000,000 copies sold.

Nas's Daughters Single

Nas just dropped a new single off his upcoming album, it is titled Daughters. The album is due out July 17th. A lot of people have been commenting on the track on twitter; basically mostly positive tweets. But his baby mama, and mother of the daughter the song is about, Carmen Bryan said she was disappointed with the track. She said it had nothing good to say about her daughter, and focused more on her negative side.  She says it will have a negative impact on the child in question.

Me, i think the song is cool, but i wish it was more knocking than that. It feels like a regular track...like a track 13 on the album or so. It's all good though, nas wants to spit his mind. You can go ahead and download the track here- Daughters

Kardashians Sign $40 Million Deal With E!

News reaching us from TMZ is that The Kardashian family have signed  a $40,000,000 deal with E! Network to keep their reality TV show, Keeping Up With the Kardashian going for another 3 seasons. WOW! This is loads of money. And, this happens to be the richest deal in Reality TV History. The reason this news is on a rap blog is the fact that Kanye West is now dating Kim, and might be the reason why the stakes are that high. I am not saying Kanye knows people and pulled strings, but Kanye dating Kim Kardashian ups her standards, and increases the number of people that would be interested in her personal life.

I have read a lot of comments from people who are wondering why this show still exist, and why E! would risk so much on a project that might not be profitable. But, statistics don't lie. And it shows that 3 million people view the show every week. One thing i have learnt in life is that the more you hate something or someone, the more attention you give that thing or that person. And if the person is money conscious enough...if the person understands business enough, like the case of Kim Kardashian and her family members, they would milk the hate.

Below is the news consigning the deal from TMZ

The Kardashian family has just signed on for 3 more seasons with E!, and it's the richest deal ever in reality TV ... TMZ has learned.

Sources connected with the deal tell us, the family will get more than $40 million for 3 more seasons of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."

The 6th season of the show averaged 3 million viewers. The 7th season begins airing May 20.

Our sources say the $40-plus million deal does not include product endorsements and other items associated with the show that Kim, Kris and the rest of the brood are able to hock.

Sources connected to  the deal tell TMZ ... Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kris and Bruce will get the lion's share of the money ... and they are each getting equal pay.

We're told Kendall, Kylie and Rob are on a lower pay grade -- and will be paid equally as well.

Scott Disick and his son Mason have a separate deal. Ditto for Lamar ... who hammered out a package deal to appear in both "Khloe and Lamar" and "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."

We're told the new deal ONLY includes existing shows -- so if Kim and Kanye get a new spinoff show ... they will have to bang out a new contract for even MORE money.

Nicki Minaj Back on Twitter

About two weeks ago, Nicki Minaj deleted her twitter page cos she could nolonger take the negativity coming from haters who follow her, but she has made a return. She fully returned to twitter Tuesday morning. Check out the tweets below that confirm that.

"*salutes the nation of Pinkslam* *hugs the barbz* *kisses the barbz*," she tweeted April 25th.

"State of the Union: Dear Barbz, our nation will not be fully reinstated to 11 million for another few days as per @twitter. It takes time ;)"

Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes 10 Years After

This was meant to have been posted yesterday, but i was a bit down and couldn't come up here. But i can't let something like this go. 10 years ago, yesterday, my favourite TLC (T-BOZ, LEFT EYE, CHILLI) member, Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes passed away from a cash accident in Honduras. On April 25, 2002 in La Ceiba, Honduras, while driving a Mitsubishi Montero Sport, Lisa Lopes allegedly tried to swerve around a truck, but there was another vehicle heading towards them in the opposite direction. To avoid a head-on collision, she swerved all the way off the road. The vehicle rolled several times after hitting two trees, throwing left-eye and 3 others out the window. I think i should stop here...i am already getting emotional all over again.

Below is news from her 10 Year Death Anniversary held
yesterday-

"The word anniversary means a celebration," Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins said in a statement as she remembered her former TLC bandmate Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, 10 years after her tragic death. "For us her death will never be a celebration -- it's still something that hurts," she added. Lopes was killed on April 25, 2002, in a car accident in Honduras. She was just 30 years old.

As Watkins and other surviving TLC member Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas remember the late rapper, they revealed the plan to forge ahead with the group as a twosome. "Yes, we're going on tour," T-Boz told Essence. "We are in negotiations now with L.A. Reid, so we'll see what happens. A lot of cool things are coming up."

Chilli added that in addition to a reunion tour, the duo will record new music and drop their first album since 2002's 3D. "Another TLC album? Yes, that's for sure! We'll have new music right after the movie drops," she revealed.

The movie the singer's referring to is a biopic about the group, which the ladies are currently working on with VH1 and is expected to be released by the end of the year. "It's going to have to be new kids; I can't think of anybody that can play us," T-Boz explained. "It's not just about looking like me or dressing like me, you have to have the attitude, the dance moves. The writer of the biopic, Kate Lanier, is amazing."

God bless her soul. She was the energetic one in the group (TLC)...the most outspoken...the rapper...my favourite member. Like Quan said- "can we have another moment of silence..."

Jadakiss "Consignment" Mixtape Tracklist

Jadakiss is still keeping his fans waiting on dropping his 4th album, which is to be titled Top 5 Dead Or Alive. Since he coined that saying, he has the rights to name his album that. Plus the fact that he surely could be considered Top 5 Dead or Alive in Hip Hop history. To whet the appetite of his fans, he has decided to drop a mixtape titled Consignment which drops this Friday- April 27. And, as he said, this not going to be like the regular mixtape where you have rappers rapping over popular beats; this is going to be in the style of Rick Ross's Mixtape, Rich Forever where all the beats are fresh, and the tracks are album standard. He is and always will be in my top 5 favourite rappers of all time, so i wish him all the best with his new project. Check out the tracklist of his Consignment mixtape below-

Okay, i think the only problem i have with this tracklist is that he didn't feature Sheek Louch enough. There is only one sheek louch guest appearance and it is at the tail end. I understand Sheek might be busy promoting the Wu-Block album, and working on his upcoming solo project, but i would have appreciated like 3 or 4 sheek features. I think The Lox (jadakiss, styles p, and sheek louch) is the best rap group ever, and they need to show the new-school rap listeners why they are legendary.

Did you guys notice anything new with jada? He grew his hair out. For the longest time, he has always gone bald. When asked why he allowed it to grow out, he said it was to prove the people that said he couldn't grow his hair that he still could. And for his mom too...saying his mom didn't believe he could grow hair anylonger. His right hand man K Rosewood, who is currently in jail is also one of the reasons why he decided to grow his hair out.

Mase Speaks on Appearing on Wale's Slight Work Single

Mase seem to really be getting things popping of recent. He just appeared on Wale's remix for Slight Work alongside French Montana, Diddy and Meek Mill. I guess all these guest appearances are to make people start getting used to him again. I guess i'm aiight that. I think it's cool for hip hop. Anyway, read what he had to say when he called into Funk Master Flex show this morning-

“I think it was French, man. A lot of love goes out to French. I don’t know why he was repping me so strong, but he was showing me Harlem love. He ain’t even from Harlem, it’s crazy. It was really French,” he said. “I was on the ‘New York Minute’  record with him and Kiss, and then after that, we was in the studio. We totally opposite, but he just showed me wild love. I rock with who rock with me.”

He said that French called Wale and they invited Mase out to the studio, but it wasn’t simple to lay down the cut. “He called Wale one time and Wale was like, come to the studio. I was in Atlanta and then I just came through and they was just blowing so hard in the studio, smoking all loud, I couldn’t even get my verse out, they kept laughing at me. I came back the next day and was like, ‘I’m ready now.’ He was like, you ready now? They threw me in the booth. Diddy got on it, everyone else got on it.”

As for his relationship with Diddy, who appears on the remix with Mase, he says that he they “surprised each other” in contributing to the cut and that they have no problem with one another. “Nah, we surprised each other. Diddy, it is Diddy. To this day, I tell people I don’t have no issues with him. I think a lot of times we get put on the other side of each other, just because of history. He’s one of the biggest contributors who ever gave to the church. We’re probably cooler than I thought.”

Now, what confuses me is Mase still bringing the church into this. I thought he would just try as much as possible not to bring that up. I just can't imagine a preacher jumping on songs with rappers who talk about selling drugs and and f***king Bitches. Well, what can i say. He might have a reason. But the latest news on him is that he is working on signing with Rick Ross's MMG label.

Rap Albums on Billboard Chart

It's a slow week for hip hop on the billboard chart. Nicki Minaj's sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded still retains the top selling rap album status for this week. The album sold 48,000 copies this week, to now total at 383,000 copies after 3 weeks in stores.

Future's debut album, Pluto is up next with 41,000 copies sold after a full week in stores. Drake is still holding things down on the chart with his Take Care album selling 16,000 copies this week. It now stands at a grand total of 1,699,000...that is 301,000 copies from attaining double platinum status.

8,300 copies of Tyga's Careless World was sold this week to now place it at a total of 199,000. Young Jeezy's TM103 is still hanging in there, and it sold 7,000 copies this week. Jeezy's 4th album is now at a total of 567,000. Trip Lee's The Good Life sold 6,000 copies this week, and now is at total of 24,000 copies.

Jay-Z and Kanye West's collabo album, Watch The Throne sold 5,000 copies this week, and now is at a total of 1,417,000. OF Tape, Vol. 2 from Odd Future is now at a total of 69,000 copies after selling 4,300 copies this week.

Diggy's Unexpected Arrival sold 2,700 copies this week, and now is at 45,000 copies sold so far. Snoop's new EP, Stoner's EP makes its debut on the chart this week selling 2,500.

Official First Week Sales of Future's Pluto Album

Future's debut album, Pluto has done a full week in stores, and it sold 41,000 copies. This is not a heavy-weight debut, so i think this is okay for a first week sales. He can build on his sales with the other singles off the album, and probably work his way to Gold satus.

D Banj Finally Speaks on Issue With Don Jazzy and Mo Hits Records

If you have been hearing a lot of news concerning or related to the D Banj and Don Jazzy split, and don't know what to believe, this latest post will put all that aside. Journalist, Ayeni Adekunle had the first interview with D Banj on the mohits split, and i most say he did a great job. The interview was conducted over the weekend, so you know it is very recent.

I particularly like how Ayeni Adekunle put this together, and i am sure you would enjoy his writing skills. So, at this point, i take a back seat, and deliver it as Ayeni said it-

‘There’s an important person in that building, right?’ the cab driver asked. ‘Important musician?’

I nodded, too tired to let any curious driver drag me into a conversation.

He got the message and left me alone the entire drive from Canary Wharf to the London Marriot Hotel, in Grosvenor Square.

Then, as I got down to get my suitcase from the trunk, he gave me a knowing look, smiled, and said ‘are you the musician?’

‘Of course not’, I said to him, smiling this time. ‘The musician is in Canary Wharf, his name is D’banj’.

Silence. Confused look.

‘D’banj?’

Yes, D’banj. He’s big in Africa. You know ‘Oliver Twist?’

Silence again, then as his final ‘no’ came, I said ‘Google him.’

It was 4am on Saturday, April 21. I arrived in London eight hours earlier, and had spent almost all of that time chatting with D’banj, in his first interview with a Nigerian newspaper in a long time, and his first interview on the Mo’Hits brouhaha.

London is D’banj’s town. He’s performed there over and over, his single
‘Oliver Twist’ is on the A-list at Choice FM, and enjoys heavy rotation on other stations. A day before I came, he spent hours doing interviews at the Universal offices in Kensington. Some might hail D’banj as the man championing the gospel of ‘Afrobeats’ across the world. But, just like the cab driver, London does not yet know D’banj.

As we walk into the Choice FM building in the afternoon on Saturday, there are no heads turning or fans gazing. In fact, his lawyer, Elias, who wore a pair of loud snakeskin boots, attracted more attention than D’banj.

Who leaves a zone where they’re comfortable and celebrated; where they’re established and successful, for a place where no one seems to give the slightest care?

D’banj, that’s who.

The 31 year-old entertainer has spent nearly two years building structures he hopes will help take his music to new markets in
Europe, and especially America. This move, he believes, cost him his friendship and business relationship with his long time partner Don Jazzy.

‘I’m a risk taker’,
he says. ‘Life is all about risks. But you must never endanger yourself. I don’t endanger myself, which is why, even though I’m here, I’m still in Nigeria all the time, performing’.

With incredible energy, and the kind of passion that endeared everyone to him when he first moved back to Nigeria in 2005,
D’banj says his deal with Kanye West is a case of ‘preparation meets opportunity’

‘I pulled up with my entourage at the Emirates first class lounge in Dubai. We were returning from Scott Tommey’s birthday. I came down with Bankuli, my P.A. Chuchu, and my business manager Chidi. My entourage was large and I was looking fly. One of the hostesses ran to me with a Kanye West placard. I said I’m not Kanye o – then I told my guys ‘Kanye is around so no dulling.’ Chuchu and Bankuli spotted Kanye walking in to check in. They went to him and he said we could come over’.

‘As they came, I had my iPad with me, and my headphones. First thing Kanye said was ‘I like your T-shirt’.
I wore a Zara T-shirt and a D&G ring. He liked my appearance and said he’d give me 5 minutes. I told him ‘I played with you in Nigeria during NB PLC Star Megajam. I’ve done a song with Snoop and we’re going to shoot the video now. I’d like to play you my songs.’ I played Oliver, Scapegoat, and Fall in love. He was dancing. He removed the headphones and said ‘I don’t mean to sound rude, but if anyone has to bring you out in the states, it has to be me, not Snoop. He asked when I was going to be in the US, and I told him I was going there that day. Then he asked who my producer was, and I said Don Jazzy. He said ‘come with him.’

Three months later,
D’banj, Don Jazzy and their crew were in New York, where, according to D’banj, it took almost forever before they could establish contact with Kanye. ‘It was only an email address he gave us at the airport. So when we got to NY, we sent several emails but got no response. Not a single one.’

‘Then we met someone that knew someone that knew another someone and we got another email address. We sent several messages again, no response. Then Bankuli sent a final one saying, ‘we have been in New York for some time and sent several emails. We have waited long enough and are now on our way to do the Snoop Dogg video’

And then the reply came.
‘Sorry to have overlooked your earlier emails. Mr. Kanye would like to meet with you tomorrow.’

‘We didn’t believe it.
Don Jazzy, who had been reluctant all along, still did not believe it. Even when we got there (Wyclef’s studio) the next day, he stood outside. When Kanye came I went to call him ‘Oya come now, come play am the music now’. It was difficult to believe it was real and it was happening. Then when Kanye came in, with the GOOD music acts, I was like, ‘wow’.

From there everything happened fast. Next they were meeting
Jay Z, making a presentation to LA Reid (At Electric studios), and discussing contracts. But while the label offered him a traditional recording contract, D’banj opted for a joint venture agreement structured to guarantee three things: retaining full control of his materials in Africa, signing Don Jazzy on board (on behalf on Mohits USA), and, he says, bringing the Universal/Def Jam imprint to Africa.

‘I’ve always thought of how I can be a useful vessel to the industry. A friend and colleague always says to me:
‘D’banj, you’re the Jesus Christ of the industry.’ So having ran Mohits for nine years, I already had plans of how we could blow Mohits up. I had plans of expanding, and most especially, bringing hope to that 11 year-old kid somewhere in Africa who may never have had the opportunity to get signed to major labels’.

‘So it was not really just about me. There’s a big market in Africa. I said to them,
‘I’ve sold millions of records in Africa, we’ve done millions of hits with CRBT, and I’ve run the most successful label on the continent. You take care of the US, but let me take you to Africa.‘ And I’m happy to tell you that we’re doing that. D’banj’s album will be the first under Universal/Def Jam Africa, and we’re already putting all the structures in place’.

‘I’m a businessman.’ I learnt from my mom, who’s a very successful businesswoman. So having run and funded Mohits for nine years, I knew we had to move to the next level. And everything we wanted was happening. Finally we could take African music to the world.’

Just like the lyrics of the song, D’banj was an Oliver Twist. Here’s a guy who had conquered a continent; was sitting on the top three list, and making more money than anyone else in his category. D’banj was a big player in Nigeria, where there are over 150 million people; a big player in Africa, with over 850 million people. But he wanted to play big globally, with 7 billion people to grab from.

And that’s where the problem started.
‘Don Jazzy was no longer comfortable. You know, we were like fishes out of water, in this new system, starting all over again, like when we returned home in 2004. I got him a place in the US, set up a studio there, just so he’d be comfortable and be able to work without going to hang around the studios. In one year Jazzy did not make a song. I said, maybe you want to go back to Lagos, you’ll get inspiration there?’ I was all about the work, I wanted us to make this happen, so we can bridge that gap and create a path for Africa. But Jazzy wanted us to go back home. And I understand. He’s my friend, my brother’.

‘But I never expected him to do what he did.’ He said to me in July last year
‘Let’s scatter Mohits. He told me there are two captains – two captains cannot be in a ship. I was like ‘that’s not possible, this is a marriage’. He said ‘then this marriage is no longer working’. I said then let’s go for counseling; I asked, so what happens to our children?’

Don Jazzy wanted Mohits, D’banj says. And that happened on April 16, 2012 – after months of a bitter feud, characterized by accusations and counter accusations, widespread speculation, leaked emails and failed reconciliation attempts.

‘You can see he has signed already’, he said, showing the agreement with Don Jazzy’s signature. ‘I have full rights to my catalogue and full ownership of my Koko Holdings, while he has full ownership of Mo’Hits, including the artistes and liabilities.’

Already judged guilty in the court of public opinion, and publicly disowned by his own boys Wande Coal and Dr SID, D’banj says he’s sad, but not bitter. Does he feel kind of lonely, alone in the cold? ‘Asking me if I’m lonely because Wande or Jazzy has left me is like asking my first sister if she’s lonely now – she has two kids now, lives in Canada. Don Jazzy is still my brother –
we just had to move on. We’ll still work together in future, same with my boys. In fact, just this week, he sent me the remix to Oliver Twist that we’re releasing in the UK on May 14. All the interviews I’ve had here, I kept hyping him. It’s already in my system – you know me, I’m a one-way soldier. Jazzy is a very quiet person. Loyalty is key. My loyalty still lies in the friendship I had with him. He was cheated by JJC, and I was present. I swore never to cheat him. But I’d like to think our visions became different.

‘It was clear when we met that Jazzy wanted to be the biggest producer, I wanted to be the biggest African entertainer, not the biggest singer. I had my mind on money. In order to say I’m the biggest, I had to be the richest. So for a very long time, he was on the back end. He respected my act, I respected his music judgment. Every meeting that brought us money I went for. I’d say
I need to confirm from Don Jazzy because that was the agreement, even though I knew it was my decision. First Glo deal was $500,000. That Landcruiser jeep was because of my demands. It was because of the skill and exposure that I used to bargain. I’m a businessman’

‘People say I’m less talented, I was known as a jester in the JJC squad. I’d make everyone happy and play the mouth organ, but I knew what I wanted. I decided to give Don Jazzy power in 2007 when we realized that after four years, they did not recognize us as a record label. We had signed artistes and done all this work. So we restructured, and restrategized. So I told him to chill, so he can be more respected and be the don.
I’m older than him by one year, yet I respected him like a don. I remember when he came out at Ali Baba show, I knelt down for him, so people would say he’s the baba. All the talking in my ears and all, it was an arrangement. All the Soundcity advert and all, he did not tell me anything. It was all an arrangement.’

With his UK publicist Vanessa Amadi taking notes nearby, his manager Bankulli interjecting every now and then, and several legal documents surrounding us, D’banj spoke passionately of his former partner in the same way a man might go on about a cherished and respected, but estranged, lover. He’s on his sixth cigarette, and thinks the room is stuffy, even though no one complains. So he opens the sliding glass for ventilation. ‘Jazzy did his part’, he says, sitting down again and looking me in the face. ‘He made the music for nine years. But nothing stops him from making for twenty more years. We could have changed the formula. Why didn’t he want to change the formula? It was time to expand the business, Mohits was Motown reloaded. We always knew we would expand, he always said I had more swagger than anyone else he knows, And I know he’s one of the best producers in the world; we wanted to make Mohits the biggest in Africa. Other labels were springing up. So if we could conquer America, London when no one had done it before. Most of our people stop in Germany, or Paris. But this is America, this is the big league; it makes us the strongest, the biggest. We had already made the money. And who best to introduce me to the rest of the world? Kanye did not want to change anything about my music, my style of dressing, or my brand. It is God’s favour. But Jazzy was and is very scared. Something had worked for eight years, so he wanted to maintain the status quo.
People are afraid to try new things.’

‘But’, he tells me, still maintaining eye contact while lighting another cigarette, ‘I’m not afraid. I’m a vessel that God is trying to use to help the industry. I’m a bridge. Once in a few years, one artiste comes from the UK to run the world, none has come from Africa. Fela was the closest. It’s been my own dream; I made my name from Nigeria, unlike Seal, Wale, and Tinie Tempah. And I want to bring Universal, Def Jam and all to Nigeria. So if I can build that bridge, then we’re good, because it will give hope to the boys in Asaba, in Oshogbo that this thing is possible.’

The day after our Canary Wharf interview, we meet up at Highbury Islington, where he’s shooting a documentary and the promo for the Oliver Twist competition for the UK. D’banj’s new crew: Semtex (a white A&R rep from the label), Bankuli and Vanessa, are on the ground, working with the production team. ‘This is why we’re here o. This is the work’, he says as he invites me into the dressing room.

‘And when people say why am I not talking, this is why. I’m focused on making this happen. It’s more important for me to make sure I don’t disappoint all those who have invested in me; all those who believe in me and are supporting the movement, than to be fighting over who’s right or wrong. Even now that I’m talking to you, I don’t even know if I should be doing this interview.’

It’s very unexpected that D’banj – the super aggresive D’banj – is speaking in this manner. He has fought many battles, cut off many former friend-associates, ignored the Nigerian media, and reportedly humiliated several Mo’hits members, including Ikechukwu and Dr SID. Temperamental, often impatient, and vocal, those who know him will tell you the D’banj they know, is not the one that’s speaking.

So I ask:

The perception is that you’ve become arrogant, unreachable, proud. You’re not the D’banj we used to know; not the D’banj I used to know – and most people in the media will say this is true

Obviously people will say stuff – but this is me. I can’t keep up with everyone, no matter how much I try. But I understand where I’m coming from. I cant forget my roots – all the interviews I had yesterday, I was ‘bigging up’ DJ Abass, he gave me my first show in London. You saw me giving Jazzy props in my interview earlier. That’s me. If I was arrogant I wouldn’t have been the one even chasing Jazzy around since he told me last July that he wanted to scatter Mohits. Last time I saw him was on February 19 at Irving Plaza. He didn’t support the show, and he only came on stage when SID and Wande were performing. I wanted peace.

And even my mom, who had supported us from beginning, who gave us the house we stayed in (in Michael Otedola estate, Lagos), the Previa bus we used and paid for Tongolo video, spoke to his parents last December; ‘this is what your son said o’. I remember my mom saying to me, ‘if you guys have been together all these years, and no wahala, then if you need to part, I hope there’ll be no wahala.’ She was very particular about that. I had enough proof to have come out and speak; this thing has been on for a long time, and we’re in April now. But I don’t want to cause any wahala. I don’t want to spoil anything. I don’t want trouble. Right now, I just want to be able to move on and do my business.’

That’s surprising, because when the leaked emails emerged, revealing private email conversations between the estranged partners, all fingers pointed at D’banj. Don Jazzy, a likeable celeb and social media addict, didn’t have anything to prove. D’banj was the one who looked bad, and, understandably, would want to make a move that could earn him public sympathy.

‘The signing (away of my shares in Mohits) was already being discussed before April 16. If I kept quiet from January till now, what would it benefit me to leak anything? Remember all the stuff about my password and all? We know where that was from, I really wouldn’t want to think it was from him, my brother, but it could be from anywhere, but I don’t want to call anyone’s name’

But were the emails forged?

Everything in those emails were facts. And I don’t even think the mails favoured me in any way. It’s not the exact mails that were sent and signed, but there were elements of truth in the mails that were published.’

Why did you tell Ebony you own Mohits?

My mom advised me not to speak. And the interviewer took it out of context. I co-owned Mohits. We registered the business in 2004, and we owned it 50:50. So I spoke about that, but the interviewer took it wrong and the fans put pressure on them and they corrected it.

How about Sahara Reporters?

I never wanted to have any interview. It was on the eve of my US show. I was told I should do the interview, because they’re very troublesome. I had to do the interview for the sake of my show the next day. I was guaranteed that there’d be no politics questions. I had not been in the country. And I had been under pressure. Sadly, when that happened and I was being attacked in the media, none of my guys came out to support me.

Looking at all this, what are your regrets?

The truth is that if nothing went wrong, you’d have still heard all this good news and Mohits would take the glory, I didn’t come out in eight years to say anything. Everyone made their contributions. There were no issues, as long as it worked. My mistake was thinking that we were one. People don’t question their brothers and sisters.

How do you feel about Wande Coal and Dr. SID taking sides with Jazzy?

I won’t be too quick to judge Wande Coal. I hear it was Jazzy that tweeted those Wande tweets. I don’t know how true that is, but I know he had our social media accounts. As at a month ago, I couldn’t access any of my accounts. My password was changed on Twitter and Facebook. Then Universal intervened. I’m about to be verified on Twitter now. I’m not really a social media person, so it was Don Jazzy and some of our other guys that were running it. Wande himself knows the truth. He cannot talk to me like that. The whole Mohits knew who ran the label businesswise. They knew who to come to when they needed to get money out, after we recorded the album. Who knows the factory where Dansa was made? But you will know the marketing manager. The car he’s driving, I bought him a brand new Prado from Phyllis and Moss after he crashed the car he won from Hiphop World awards. I bought six Range Rovers last year. I bought D’Prince an LR 3 last year, he crashed it, then I bought him a Range, and it’s true that I bought two Bentleys. Because of Jazzy. But after July last year, after the issue with Jazzy, I bought myself the Aston Martin.

You bought that? I thought that was a gift?

I bought it.

How were you able to fund all that?

In the last nine years, there are a few people and corporate bodies that God has helped me build relationships with, either individuals or banks, or even corporates that are involved in the growth of the industry. I’ve enjoyed their support, and even now that we’re going global, we’re pooling the funds together from all these places.

Could you possibly be Nigeria’s richest pop star? A billionaire?

Vanity upon vanity. Money is material. In terms of what we’re doing, you’ll call me a Trillionaire, because this vision is too big for only me. With the help of the industry, the government, people like you Ayeni, we will not only be billionaires, but trillionaires, and not just me, but every little kid that has same talent like Beyonce, or Nicki Minaj. And with the standard of the UMG worldwide, we can pass people out from our own Universal Music Group Africa, Universal Def Jam Africa, and everyone should jump on this ship with us. It’s not the Titanic.

There’s been a lot of confusion – what label exactly are you signed on?

My album comes out under my label/GOOD Music/Island Def Jam. I’m funding the D’banj album, in America, through GOOD Music/Island Def Jam. GOOD Music is Kanye West who is co-executive producing with me. The deal comprises of Island Def Jam, in US. But in UK, it is under Mercury. My first single will be released in Europe on May 14. My work will be released in Africa through Universal/Def Jam. We don’t have these structures in Africa, and they’ve seen how much money they’ve lost. They’ve seen what I’ve done with Mohits. I made my pitch to them; I’ve made them realize how much they were losing in the African region. Over 150m Nigerians, over 800m Africans. 2% of that is 8.5m. They were not making anything except from S.A, which has been the US of Africa. So we will be launching this label in Ghana, in partnership with Vodafone, launching in Nigeria in partnership with MTN. Def Jam Africa will be up soon; Kenya, SA, and North Africa will follow.

Why are you risking all this? What if you burn your fingers and lose everything you’ve worked for?

Lose out? Well, I am happy I even have something to risk. To whom much is given, much is expected. Look at Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Jay Z, Kanye West, these people take it to the max, take it to where they believe that they can push it to. In the first instance, coming back to Nigeria with Jazzy was because I was a risk taker. And I wouldn’t say I’m throwing everything away. I would say I’m putting everything back in, in order to rip into the future. I get a broadcast from Tonye Cole everyday. He says when you tell people this your vision, know that it’s not for you alone – it’s for everyone. It’s like what Fela did. If what I’m doing doesn’t work, but sows that seed that will germinate in three, five years, it means my name will be written in gold.

Some people have tried this before you, unsuccessfully. Do you have doubts and fears sometimes?

My last album was in July 2008 – no album in four years and I know what I still command in those four years. The momentum for me to be able to do this is because I see how much it took me, I saw the benefit, it’s God, and the favour of the relationships we’ve built. Plus, I don’t take no for an answer, I don’t take negativity. It will work in Jesus’ name. If not, I wouldn’t have landed in the UK and hear Oliver Twist on the radio. Nor would I be in the mainstream media with them saying I’m pioneering afrobeats. I said to them ‘Oh hell no, that’s Fela’s music. Fela is the legend.’ So I pray to God – I beg my fans, it‘ll be good to do half a million downloads. It’s possible, it’s a different market. Platinum in UK is 300,000. I believe with the support of my people in Redding, Coventry, Dusting, Hackney, Thamesmead, Abbeywood, we can do it.’

And so, as I say my goodbyes and flag down the cab that’ll take me to Heathrow Airport, I can’t help thinking out loud: should one man sacrifice the wishes of the collective on the altar of ambition and material wealth? But then, what should be expected of the man whose dreams and ambition grow beyond those of other – possibly myopic- members of the collective: should an individual sacrifice his personal desires; derail his destiny, so to speak, in the interest of the collective?

In all of this, faithfulness and loyalty have been brutally murdered. And the jury is still out on who pulled the trigger

Nas Announces Life Is Good Release Date

Legendary rapper, Nas yesterday used twitter to announce the release date of his 10th album Life Is Good. His over 600,000 followers on twitter went ecstatic, cos they had been waiting for this information for a while now. So, now, it's official, Life Is Good drops July 17 2012. In the past, Nas has released two albums in the month of July- 16 years ago, he released It Was Written on July 2; and 4 years ago, he released his Untitled album on July15.

I think it is cool that there are no Big artists dropping around that time. This will give Nas the power to capture most of the hip hop listening audience out there. I think, this is one of the most marketing Nas has done for any of his albums before drop date. Nas is on twitter informing his fans on the album's developments every now and then; his episode of VH1 Behind The Music just premiered last week, and it is being repeated on TV every couple of days; he was featured on a track off Nicki Minaj's just released second album; he has been promoting the video to his seconds single from the album, The Don for a couple of weeks now, and it drops this week Friday (April 27). I think all these moves will put Nas more in the public eye, without crossing the line to over-saturation.

As a Nas fan, i feel good for his recent moves. For him to have been in the game for 20 years, and still command this much attention, without the usual gimmicks that is used by a lot of rappers nowadays is a miracle. As he said in one of his recent tweets- "its not escobar's season, it's nasty nas season". He also put up a link for followers to view the cover-art of his latest single, Daughters, which will be dropping May1st. He has put out two singles for the street hip hop heads, it is time to put out an emotional track for the ladies.

I think Nas has an incredible promotion team behind him right now. Because, from tweets that i have read so far, more females are becoming fans' of his music. Whether it is just his music, or his looks, he sure has gained more female fans. From middle of last year (2011) to present time, he gained up 100,000 followers on twitter. And he currently gains up to a thousand followers daily. I like the fact that Nas has been able to do all these without compromising his music. Let the people that like him continue to like him for who he is, and the new people open their eyes to the greatness in his music. As Busta Rhymes said in 2009- "Nas is the best rapper in the world, period!"

D Banj Signs With Mercury Records

I guess things are looking really good for D Banj, even with all the brouhaha going on with the Mo Hits crew. It became official in Feb that he was parting ways with his long time friend and partner in business, Don Jazzy. Since that happened, people concluded that D Banj couldn't go far without Don Jazzy. I guess this news, that he has singed with Mercury Records should give his haters a reverse of thought. He also released the video to his hit song, Oliver Twist, which had Kanye West and some other G.O.O.D Music artist making cameos a couple of weeks ago.

Mercury Records is a Standalone company in the U.K and part of the Island Def Jam Group in the U.S: both are subsidiaries of The Universal Music Group. What this means is that D Banj is global. Mercury would distribute his music in the U.K and all over Europe, G.O.O.D Music/Island Def Jam would handle the U.S angle, and you already know he has Africa covered. I wish him all the best in his BIG DREAMS!

Mase Signing With Rick Ross's MMG Label

Recently, the word out was that Mase was in the studio recording with Rick Ross and French Montana. He had also earlier been in the studio working with r&b singer, Omarion. People started asking questions- Is Mase planning another comeback? I guess so. And, according to reliable sources, he is signing with MMG (Mayback Music Group), owned by none other than Rick Ross.

Back in my high-school days, Mase was the ish. I Remember having a Harlem World tape that my friends and i played on our battery operated tape deck in the dormitory. Back in the mid 90s, Mase and Puff Daddy (Diddy) ran the game. After Biggie died; they dropped hit after hit after hit. I guess that's why Jay-Z said on his A Star Is Born track that "Nobody could touch him when puff had it." That's a fact. I remember a week back in the 90s where, on the Billboard singles chart, the number 1, 2 and 3 tracks were Mo Money, Can't Nobody Hold Me Down, and I'll be missing you Puffy was untouchable back then, and Mase was his right hand man.

Read the related news below-

An insider within Maybach Music Group told The Source the following information:
“Yes, I think its safe to say Omarion is MMG.” As the Maybach Music empire continues to evolve, it may not end there. Seems as if there is another offer on the table, I don’t want to let no cats out the bag but we’ll see what’s good with Ma$e.”

When pressed about what the roster may look like in the upcoming months, “As far as newest members Omarion and shout out to Ma$e if he wants to get down with this movement then we’ll see what happens.”

With Kanye West using two Ma$e lines in his new smash “Way Too Cold” (“TheraFlu”), it’s pretty safe to say that Ma$e is a hot commodity right now. He IS your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper, after all. Well, at least he’s Kanye’s self-proclaimed favorite rapper.

If Mase is ready to give this shot all his got, i think he can get a buzz again. He can still tour off his hits from the 90s, so he is still marketable. People are saying he has been gone too long; i don't think that really matters. I heard his last album from 2004 (Welcome Back), when he returned to the game, and i think he still got it. And i heard some underground tracks he dropped when he was down with G-Unit back in 2005/2006 era, so i think he is still good.

I think its a good move overall. The two parties involved get to gain something. Rick Ross is a workaholic, and he will make sure Mase gets something out with no delays. And in return, more money to his empire...and more reputation also.

Dagrin; 2 Years Later

This day, 22 April, in 2010 a fast rising rapper from Nigeria passed away. He was involved in an accident after living a club late at night. His car crashed into an immobile vehicle on his way home. He didn't die at the spot, but  struggled for his life (at the hospital) a couple of hours before giving up.

I can actually remember that day like it was yesterday. I had earlier heard rumors about him having an accident in the morning, but i went out. I came back tired and went to bed. But i woke up later at night, and there an air of eeriness about and around me. So, i logged on to my computer, and the news was everywhere...Dagrin had died. I didn't believe it, even though it was the major news all over all the social media websites online.

I immediately came up here to my blog, and poured my heart out. Through the days that passed, a lot of other websites quoted some of the lines from that my original post...i guess they caught the reflections of my deep emotions in that article. Dagrin was an epitome of the saying- "you can become anything you want to be, as long as you put your mind to it, and believe in yourself." The painful side of his death was that he was at the peak of his career. He was doing something that had been done before, but in a great way. People never thought a rapper, delivering his lyrics in the local Yoruba dialect could go that far. At the time of his death, he was arguable the biggest star in the country.

Passing away at 23 and to have achieved so much is a testament to the greatness of his life. Dagrin would forever be remembered. And as jay-z implied in his Young Forever single- if you want to stay forever young, pour your heart into your art. Dagrin poured his heart into his music. He entertained us...he educated us...he told us his story. Never did i imagine that a rapper would have so crafty a wordplay rapping in Yoruba. Dagrin proved a lot of people wrong, and he went out great because he was loved by all. R.I.P Dagrin!

Rihanna Speaks on Marijuana Smoking Incidence

Recently, at the Coachella concert, Rihanna took photos of herself, sitting on her bodyguards' shoulders, and rolling up some powdery substance...which she later started smoking. People guessed it was Marijuana, and some think it was Cocaine. Mtv news twitted the incidence, and Rihanna quickly responded; letting them know she didn't give a fuck what anyone thought.

Photos of Rihanna appearing to roll a marijuana blunt at the Coachella Music Festival over the weekend have sparked online criticism of the R&B star -- but she has some strong words for the haters. "Yikes. @Rihanna's marijuana photos from Coachella spark controversy," MTV wrote on its Twitter account on Thursday afternoon, posting shots from the singer's Instagram feed and drawing a barbed response from Rihanna herself. "@MTV Yikes... @rihanna ran out of f***s to give," she tweeted back. MTV has since deleted its tweet, though the story remains posted. "I'm crazy, and I don't pretend to be anything else," Rihanna tweeted on Tuesday, in response to fans concerned by the photos. (Billboard)

What can i say? Let the kid live her life. She is a young girl, with the fame of an adult, i think she needs to let off some steam and relax sometimes. If this is how she wants to do it, who are we to speak against it? But i particularly like that pic of her, snoop and warren g below.

Nicki Minaj Says She Wont Be Returning to Twitter

Last weekend, famous female rapper, Nicki Minaj shocked her over 11 million followers/fans on twitter when she decided to delete her twitter page. She later explained that she couldn't take the negativity coming from some of her followers, who pose as fans any longer. She was on the Tim Westwood show recently, and when asked if she would be returning to twitter, she said- "I can't come back".

Read part of the interview below-

"Do you," she asked radio host Tim Westwood when he professed how much fans miss her on Twitter. "I know. [laughs, reads statement from Westwood] 'Nicki Minaj, please come back to Twitter. We love you and it isn't the same without you. Do it for the Barbz and Kens and everyone who loves to wear pink on a Friday. Give me life.' ... [Am I going to come back?] No. Tim, I can't. I miss my Barbz. [They miss me,] but I can't come back. I just can't Tim, don't make me, please don't. Let's move on." (Tim Westwood TV)

Suge Knights Says He Would Beat Rick Ross Up

I have an idea Suge Knights (Death Row Records Co- Founder) is looking for attention. Yesterday, the news about him was that he believed Tupac was still alive somewhere; then today, the news is that he wants to beat Rick Ross up.

"I can't sit up here and say I'm bitter to Rick Ross, 'cus like anybody else, we don't know Rick Ross," Suge said. "That's a guy who uses somebody else's name. This guy comes from being a correctional officer. I don't got nothing negative [against him] personally, I just feel like he do do good music, and you can't take that from him. That boy got bars, he's gonna write…at the same time, I feel like there's a line you cross, and Rick Ross crossed that line. If you're gonna be with guy [Diddy] who killed Tupac, you can't go turn around and do a record [called] 'Tupac Back'…Rick Ross is a grown ass nigga. I'll beat the dog shit out of Rick Ross for manipulating these people out here."

Personally, i am tired of people bringing up Rick Ross's C.O issue; yeah, he was a correctional officer, and so what? Even if he was a cop i wouldn't give a shit. Howmany rappers are who they rap about on a day to day basis? And, this keeps coming up because of Ross's success. Rick Ross dropped his first album in 2006, but in 2000, when he was hanging around Erick Sermon, and featuring on his album, no one brought up this issue. I am sure he probably left that C.O job like 13 years ago. Do you know what you can do with your life in 13 years?

And as for Suge Knights, i think he is just bitter about Ross's success and the fact that He (knights) is nolonger relevant in hip hop. Just look at all the people making Ross's C.O situation a big deal- 50 cent, shyne, suge knight...people that nolonger have a buzz in the industry. You don't see T.I, Kanye, Jay-Z, Emine, Lil Wayne, or Drake bringing that ish up. Black people need to get over envy of every successful black man out there. It is the same everywhere...the hate is in America, as much as it is in Nigeria and every other country that has Negros in it.

And back to the reason Suge gave for wanting to beat Rick Ross up: i thought he said yesterday that he didn't believe Tupac was dead? Yesterday he said he believed Tupac planned his own death, and that he was somewhere hiding. And now he is claiming Diddy killed Tupac. I am starting to think Suge is just saying all these to get attention away from himself in the Tupac Murder investigation. This dude is suspect men!

Nicki Minaj Speaks on Deleting Twitter Page

Nicki Minaj, last weekend, deleted her twitter page. Twitter went crazy, and her 11 million followers started begging her to rethink her move. That lead to her name trending on google the next day. Anyway, she has come forward to speak on what prompted that move.

Meanwhile, Nicki claims a voice in her head told her to delete her twitter account earlier this week after she got angry about her music being leaked online but Nicki has pleaded for her fans to stand by her. She explained: 'A voice in my head told me to delete my twitter and that's what I did. I had 11 million followers and I hope they will wait for me. I miss my Barbz, please wait for me.' (Monster & Critics)

Suge Knight Doesn't Believe Tupac Is Dead

Through the years, i strared away from reporting any news in line with whether Tupac was still alive or not, but this new news from Suge Knight (Co Founder of Death Row Records) himself got me thinking...maybe he is still alive.

Read what Suge said before i continue-

Knight says his theory explains why cops never found his murderer -- because there was no murder.

"Maybe the question is ... Pac's not really dead ... pac's somewhere else," Knight says.

When asked if he ever saw Tupac's body following the 1996 shooting, he adds, "Nobody seen Tupac dead. "

Knight explains, "The person who supposedly cremated Tupac ... this guy got about 3 million dollars .. personally from me ... cash ... and next thing I know I never heard from the guy or seen him again ... he retired and left." (TMZ)

Hmm! Interesting. So, he didn't see Tupac's dead body? That's funny. But if Tupac faked his death, it would definitely have something to do with some witness protection bullshit with the feds/cia. But the thing is that He (suge) was the only one in the car with Tupac at the time of the shooting. Sometimes, i keep wondering, with all the rapid fire going on, why didn't Suge get at least 3-4 bullets in him as well. I hear just one bullet grazed him or so.

Or, this whole thing suge is saying might just be promo for the new Tupac Hologram thing that Dr Dre created. And since there is talks of a dr dre, snoop and tupac (the hologram) tour, this might just be a way to hype people up about it.
